We have an artic blast due to arrive this weekend. Our weather lore experts reckon on a colder than normal November. I've been running around like a headless chicken digging up tender plants into pots only to realise there ain't nowhere to put them...I've quite literally run out of storage space
I always hate it when snow arrives as temps go a lot lower due to heat reflection back into space. Give me a frost any day.

Artic blast was a non starter... just cold wind and a touch of ground frost. Cannas,Dahlias, Nanas were unaffected. A warmer week ahead 10-12C.. positively tropical

I got 50% discount on them.. so buy now worry later :? I bought a Yucca Baccata, Rupicola,Gloriosa bright edge and Phoenix Theophrasti supposedly hardy to -12C when mature.
CIDP is tender as a Ducks bottom in my area but hardy in London.. 50 miles away

Phoenix theophrasti...wow, that's quite a find.

Get your pruning shears sharpened, Andy, to look after suckers.

And the fact that you can grow it--and nearby a CIDP--proves how unfair the "twin 52N" really is.

Andy, I think you have a real chance with P. theophrastii in your area (if kept dry, as I'm sure you know  ). You should also look into some of the high-altitude Phoenix species!

Who's got the most snow today? I think Igor has. According to the article on Polish website there was a huge snowfall in Almaty - up to 40cm! Check out this movie: http://tvnmeteo.tvn24.pl/informacje/swi ... 1,1,0.html

Right! Marceli, thanks for a such nice link about Almaty's snowfall! I live in the area at the higher altitude and "my" snowfall was even worse. Pictures taken this morning attached:

marceli, thanks for posting that great video link.
Funny seeing that bride and groom trying to walk in it.
Wow, what a whack of snow!

Great photos Igor! Man oh man, that's a lot of snow, good insulation :D
I hope that 5th pic isn't your GH buried...how does your GH survive snow weight?
And that 6th pic...I absolutely love walled gardens, a wonderful micro climate.
Your palms (under the blue tarp?) look well protected.

No worries, at my place I'm looking forward for below freezing temperatures for at least THREE MONTH. By the way, the coldest temperatures ever registered in my city happened in November (-34,2 C) and in the end of February (-37,4 C). But I'm still optimistic on growing exotic plants here :bootyshake: :bootyshake: :bootyshake:

Ah, the snow makes or breaks the odds of survival up here!

Igor, I had as much snow as you (about a foot an a half), at low elevation (im at 150M). The winds came off the lake, and bam..... Then we got this warm spell, and rain. Now most of the snow is gone, and my insulation :(

We went from -5C for a high to 5C.....

Yeah, it is my my GH under 0.5 m snow that is a solid built construction... By the way my yucca variegated gloriosa and recurvifolia varieties overwinter there.
And palms under the blue tarp should be OK this winter too.

What I like in our winter most of all - once the snow has fallen down it's never melt away until beginning of March. It's accumulating only from snowfall to snowfall. That's why the snow is a great insulation in my place.

Igor - Typically that is what it is like here. Over the last 30 years, winter has gotten 4 weeks shorter (2 weeks earlier spring, and 2 weeks later fall on average). When I was a kid, november was cold, and we always had snow. When I was really young, the first halloween I remember we had tons of snow. As I got older we got less snow that time of year, and when we did it melts. The older I got the later the snow fell, and the more it melted.

Now, if it snows in mid december it tends to stay, but the 3/5 previous winters, we had slush and above freezing temps the week of christmas. On the other hand, there has only been one winter with under a foot of snow, and that was 2 winters ago, when we got less then an inch all winter. Usually by mid January we have at least a foot or more (and when I was a kid, there would be so much snow in hards it would get to my chin!)

I dont care what some people say, the climate is weird up here and more then likely changing. Whether that is a long term change, or a short term cycle, I have no idea.

This is what I need! Unfortunately last winter we got -30C almost without snow. That's the worst thing: no snow cover for plants.

That's the worst thing: no snow cover for plants.
That's for sure!
One winter without snow even damaged my y.filamentosa leaves and I thought they were bulletproof.

Snow is good too for keeping palm protection attached to the ground  in windstorms.

Good to learn your GH can take the weight, Igor.

Im agree with canadianplant..samething here near Montreal..the weather is changing...but we still have near 1-2 feets of snow every winter but for 3 months instead of 4.
Good luck Igor, but snow give the best insulation. We had that kind of heavy snow in 2007-2008...at least 3 feets depth everywhere.

I use the snow to insulate my borderline plants, especially the bamboo, which i bend to the ground. If we have a 'normal' winter it works really well. However, if we have little snow the plants are left exposed and there will be extensive damage.

I should say as well, that if we have a winter like 2011/12 (i.e. a non-winter, which for me is a zone 6 winter) there will be little damage on anything that I grow!

Your bamboo is so nice, certainly worth wrapping

Yesterday you folks broke the Canadian record for warmth!
Imagine! In December!
