April fool's weather......frozen palm pots

Post by TimMAz6 » Sun Apr 01, 2012 6:16 am

Woke to frozen palm pots and lots of frost. Low was 27F......it was suppose to be in the low 30's.

If I knew it was gonna be that cold I would have closed up my greenhouse and protected my Washingtonia! I hope the Citrumelo in the greenhouse is OK.

Tim, that's unfortunate! It has been pretty cold at night here too lately, with -7 C last night. I'm going to be in Massachusetts next weekend, so I hope the weather is warmer there by then!!

I'm convinced all the senior forecasters have retired and the new guys don't know squat.

Sad to hear that Tim and Jim.
Fingers crossed they'll be OK with just that one cold blast.

Tim, you are right. The April weather is so unpredictable! I wouldn't surprised if we will get a badly snow and frost after http://www.theweathernetwork.com/fourteenday/kzxx0001.

Hope we won't.

Hi Igor

Your temperatures finally look like they are getting warmer. I hope the cold will not return.

Hi John,

I have not noticed any damage to those palms which were frozen the other day......but I haven't looked too close either. I only have the hardiest types like Trachy, Needle and Sabals.

Tim I have a bunch of trachy seedlings in 3" pots that froze solid a few times in the past couple of years (due to wrong weather reports - haha) and they are all doing well. Paul

Tim and Paul,

Good to hear that little palms in pots can make it through some frozen temps in early spring.
