-30C !!!!

Post by Paul Ont » Sun Feb 06, 2011 12:08 pm

Just back from a trip to the tropics, and I was looking over the weather while I was away. Keep in mind that the coldest temperature recorded for ~5 years was recorded before I left (-28C).

Since I left we have recorded 4 days with minimum temps below -20C, one of which was -30.3C! Now that's some serious cold!

What did everyone else hit?

Tulsa has had a low of -6 oF (-21 oC) while you were gone, which is pretty darn chilly for 35oN latitude.

I saw Vineland and Trenton on your list and I laughed: we have a Vineland and Trenton here in NJ. Don;t think it got that cold here though.

The airport got hit with -37C. My yard was only -32C ( thank you lake supirior). Ive asked a few other people to check the temps that day too. The people around my area all had generaly the same temps as me ( mines on a north wall).

My aunt ( who is further inland then even the airport, about half hour drive from my house) was -40C.

"only -32C" Very few people can say that.

We're losing our benefit from the lake down here. As soon as it freezes it becomes more of a liability than a help!

I think St. john's wins, so far their low has been in the -12C range!

Anyone in the praries can say that LOL. Dispite the weather data, we dont get that cold very often here. Mabey 4 or 5 days out of the whole winter ( concidering less then 10 years ago, -30C was very common during the winter here)

The bay, the city is on used to freeze over every single winter, from november to march or april. Now it freezes every couple winters, from december to march. The lake itself doesnt freeze, so we still get some of the moderating effects. I didnt know lake ontario freezed that much??

The coldest temperatures here was oddly enough in November at -2C. December we saw -1C and February OC. Hopefully we are done with the frost as everything is starting to grow.

Sable island is part of the province that I live in  It's hilarious because for elections etc it's part of the Halifax riding, but the two places have little in common, only because Halifax is the closest land to it!

I would love to go out there and plant some t. fortunei etc, but they would be removed right away by the staff there  They remove any non-native plants. I only know one person who's been there, and you need to have special permission, as well as a very long helicopter ride over the open Atlantic!

For a long period of time this winter, the lowest temps at my place were -12 C ! I thought I was headed for an 8a winter

Cameron,
I thought the same thing every January that I live in Halifax! Seems the yearly low there is generally in February. Here it is usually in January, but can (and has) fallen in December, January, February, and even March!

Jesse- I'll post an update once I have a chance to look at my plants.

For the last 100 years the abs. minimum in my town was registrated the last days of February 1951 (- 37,2 C). The second minimum some November's day 50 years ago (-34,2C). And minus 30 three or four times in history in January.

1951 was quite a year (no, I am not old enough to remember). McCurtain County (where our Sabal minor live) got to -22 oC then.
I'll get to -21 oC tomorrow morning, which is a local record low for the day, and colder than I have experienced in my life.
W is from Michigan where that cold is normal, but she grumbles that she moved to Oklahoma so she would never have to feel that again. She is working lots of overtime as she seems to be the only nurse who can drive in the 66 cm of snow we have had in the past 12 days. --Erik

It just keeps comming eh?

Ive seen "alert" on your weather icon a few times this week. Seems you got another 10cm of snow? That is a plus, free insulation!

I hope its over soon. Your animals will be fine, and im sure your plants will too.

Wait untill Sunday/Monday for the warm up Eric. In the mean time, lots of soup and coffee ( some Jagermiester will warm you up, and make you forget the last 2 weeks :D )

So, what are the benefits of this exclusive club? :D

check out the map on my "Oklahoma colder than the south pole this morning" thread. It did not get nearly as cold down there.
I plan to go down there next week, but don't know if I'll get to do vet. checks on the 'gators.

They are probably asleep, or dead ( unfortunatly).

As far as i remember from the pet store, most reptiles can " hybernate" to some degree. But once a threshold temp is reached, they sleep to death ( so to speak).

They have experienced low temps before ( whos to say its "never" gotten that cold there?? It has now right?) and animals arent stupid. Although, im sure lots of things may not have made it unfortunatly :S

I used to keep reptiles, and knew a couple of people who kept gators. I have a feeling that they would still be "hibernating", I forget the word for it now.

ah so thats how you spell "hibernating" LOL

All I remember is that they fall asleep, and can actualy take quite low temps ( theyve been around for millions of years and have seen massive temprature swings). Some can take more then others. You cant expect a Columbian Red Tail Boa to take -20C.

I WILL say. A customer came in, and told me her California Kingsnake got out and outside in ( in Calgary Alberta), where the ground thaws and freezed constantly. She found him warming up in the springtime, beside the foundation

Bryan, whom I bought the big Sabal "Lou" from, keeps 'gators.
http://www.alligatoralley.com/
When this gets past us, I'll ask how they (and his palms) fared.
Mind you, OKC was a mild -5 oF today.
Ah, must be nice to live at 35.5 oN vs. my frigid 35.9 oN. It's all about the latitude....

Jesse,
and this article from the same source (Tulsa's major newspaper) goes over the temps:
http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article. ... arin713416

It does qualify the "oklahoma colder than the south pole" claim by pointing out that the south pole is experiencing a heat wave right now. (Note: please lets not start talking GW now My senator, Inhofe, who lives near me, will start that soon enough, thank you.) This same article points out that a spot in Russia got to -70 oF today, which made me feel a whole lot better. Love to see photos of their palms!
