How sad to read of dead palms, bird of paradise, barrel cactus and their groundcovers.
That story, and several others I've read, all suggest holding off all pruning until late spring/early summer...not to cut dead stuff off.
Unless there's a safety issue with a sidewalk below.

Yet the story's picture shows "palm pruning on Wednesday"

I am so bummed out, record cold for Southern AZ, tonight could be single digits F or colder. :x

I don't want to see all the palms burnt and more dead cactus this trip! Wherever I go...everthing freezes! I may have jinkxed that area.

Doesn't seem to take very many cold nights either...
all while we measure winter in months :|

Interesting that the damaged palms post were from March
Hoping that this is all they get of winter.

...and the Joshua trees

Hi Aaron,

the cold is a good opportunity to find some hardy forms of cactus.

Let us know how cold it gets down in AZ.

That freeze happened in Feb, so probably most of the palms looked dead by March. :)

The Joshua trees will all be ok, they laugh at this kind of cold. I watch an area where they grow in nature and half the time that area is as cold as it is here if not colder (sometimes) They grow in the wild just West of Pioche NV and they have some very old J-trees in the town, and it's cold there! :D

I think that saguaro... two years ago survived three very cold nights in a row, 4f, -1f, 3F I think that is what my nieghrs said they had that week. And sense then it has grown over a foot taller, they grow faster than most people think. Well maybe not in the wild?

Some of the saquaros and and other cactus froze that winter there, I think they are running out of big specimens. There was a very nice Trichocereus tersheckii in town (Sunsites) before the "big freeze" but I could not find it that summer. :x
And they had some of the biggest golden barrels I have ever seen, but they were just about all dead. Other than the "big freeze" the coldest I've seen it there over the years (sense I've been watching) was 12f.

You may want too give them a mapped out plan where we want them to go next year.
I try this ever year with the inlaws, but they just keep going where ever they want. :x

I was also suprized how cold it can get in some places of the soutwest, I guess that's why some of those plants can deal with even our cold. :D

Yeah, especially with elevation.

You'll have to get them "into" cold hardy plants...

Just got an email from friends who live in Scottsdale AZ during our Cdn winters.
She said a few of their full-time (U.S.) neighbors are heading off to Hawaii to get away from AZ cold. :confused1:

Here is a few official records that came from the Sunday freeze. These are all from places that are zone 8 or better, have large, long term palms growing. I could post about warmer area's, but sense this is a cold hardy forum I thought I would post about the places on the egde of the "palm zones".

My property (Sunsites) 5F

Sunsites AZ 7F old record 13F 1964

Kingman AZ 11F not a record, record 9F 1963

Bisbee AZ 7F old record 18F 2005

Cool that they got it New Year's Eve.

Neat to see the 3 dogs who've never stepped on snow before

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Well, I did not think this was as bad as the big freeze, but maybe close?

Talked with my nieghbors and they had three cold days in a row, 5F,3F,7F

But now they are like 70F, we will see if any of the saguaro's are still alive. :| I hope this roller coaster is not an ever year thingy.
