warm weather in Calgary!

Post by Cowtown Palm Society » Thu Nov 04, 2010 4:03 pm

-2.7 this morning (Nov. 4, 2010)
23.6 this afternoon

It's always an interesting ride in Calgary! All the yuccas and palms look happy. No protection yet. Lots of frost, but many warm highs too. The worst we've done in my part of town is about -5.5. I'll start getting my protection rigged up pretty soon for the looming inevitability. But we'll sure take this for now.

Duncan with such warm afternoons, a light blanket thrown over more tender stuff would do in the interim.

Duncan,
our weather patterns are similar despite my being rather closer to the Gulf of Mexico (but not close enough!).
Today we started at -3 oC but got to 20 oC. It is our shared pattern of dry air and lack of clouds. --Erik

Hi Erik,

Crazy. Has the northern jetstream dipped way south? I know you guys can get some downright chilly weather when that happens. Although, if it has we're almost always 10x worse! Wait a week or two, and our weather will have nothing in common  ! Thanks for the message. Take care!

To the day!

It's hard to look at that weather sticker and see 1(F) right now

Our weather gets cold next week but they have backed off on saying single digits (F)
and are now saying teens(F),-10ish(C)

If we get snow we may see the single digits though.

The only thing missing from this cold is the snow-pack up north that usually
doesn't allow much moderation.

Duncan,
I stand corrected
Right now I have a strong south wind and can practically smell the Gulf of Mexico
(it smells like oil. But so does Oklahoma. And Alberta  )
It now looks like a mere -4 oC by weeks ends, which is not much worse than I've had already.
Anyway, about time to make a batch of ice tea and head back to the garden :D

Just kidding, enjoy it Erik. All temperature aside, it looks very lovely. I'll try to get some photos up.

Thanks Jim!

Unlike many places in Canada, we do thankfully get breaks in the form of the warm westerly chinook winds.

Looks like we could be cooking by next weekend 8) !

Barb,

These tend to be, what I cynically call, suicide prevention forecasts  . I think they're more of a public mental health service than science. I figure the only scientific part is the 50/50 probability that a chinook will occur after an arctic blast. The only thing the forecasters get right for Calgary is the arctic stuff!

I'm actually hoping for a sockeye though  .

Duncan, if Alberta's chinook is suicide prevention forecast, GlobalTV can be blamed for sadism.

This is Global's: Click on Monday, Scroll down my area's Monday forecast lows (for Tues a.m.) -28C (WC-37C)
http://www.globaltvbc.com/weather/login.html

This is EC's for the same time period (Tuesday morning low) -13C
http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/pag ... ric_e.html

How could there be fifteen degrees between two agencies?

(Should'a put this in your EC/WN topic! sorry).

Sockeye on the BBQ ... heaven!
Stay warm and safe
