Strongest storm ever recorded.

Post by hardyjim » Wed Oct 27, 2010 8:15 am

We have just had(still going actually) the strongest storm EVER recorded for lowest non-tropical
pressure in the interior U.S. At 28.24"/956.2 mb.

This storm had lower central pressure than the last 4 hurricanes in the Atlantic!

This would be almost a Cat 3 hurricane if over water- the storm is stronger than the 93 super storm nor-easter!

The Ricin look like they were freeze dried(from wind),some were also snapped in half-luckily I took pictures and removed a few things-
I also tied up my Abyssinian and Thai black banana plants.
So far so good but this is a 2 day-at least- wind event, the duration is taking it's toll!

First freeze likely Friday morn,26-30(F)possible.

Thanks for the update, Jim--I was thinking about you.
We had the lower tail of this same storm and the winds were fierce here. W thought it must be Hurricane Richard.
Speaking of which, I'm getting updates from friends down in Belize.
Share photos when you get the chance, although you are probably busy getting ready for that first frost. We'll likely get it here at the same time. --Erik

I'm glad you held up, Jim. I'm hoping for more updates from folks here who were in the path of this.

Ive been meaning to ask you guys how faired with this. The storm was centered over my city for a day. The lake had 8 meter waves ( thats over 20 feet), 20 000 people were out of power. Saskatchewan ad manitba recieved 30cm of snow, while we got over 40 mm of rain. IT streatched as far south as louisiana, as far west as colorado, and as far east as the maritimes. ITs unfortunaly not the strongest storm ( lowert pressure) to hit. Heres a link for the biggest storms around the great lakes:

http://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/s ... topstories

This storm was called a weather bomb. Essentialy its a low pressure system that drops so many MB per hour. The strongest one that ive found was in the 70s, that sunk the dmund fitzgerald at 980MB. WE had a smaller one in 1996. The storm was the size of a small city, then within an hour it was the size of the whole northern part of ontario, aimed right at us. Green sky, sidways rain..... tornadoes too ( we very very very rareley get them this close to the lake due to the ancient old mountains here. IF this was in the summer, it wouldnve been very similar.

Tornadoes have been reported in texas and the mid west, and around georgia. Colorado recieved 40cm of snow. St louis had high enough winds to damage brick structures.

The shear size of the storm i think, is the kicker. IT affected more then half canada and the US. We still have some of the winds asociated with it, but were out of the worse. IT is moving up towards huduns bay and will continue moving east.

2. Great Ohio Blizzard January 26, 1978 (958 mb/28.28")
3. Armistice Day Storm November 11, 1940 (967 mb/28.55")
4. November 10, 1998 storm (967 mb/ 28.55")

My Thai black bananas and Rajapuri stood up to 50mph winds-only
to be frozen tonight-that's not to shabby but their leaves are!

Glad to hear your Musa made it. Mine did, too, if a bit tattered.
Forecast for Bixby tonight is 29 oF so I have work to do this evening.
Here is a photo my father-in-law took on Lake Michigan:
