Florida road trip

Post by TerdalFarm » Fri Mar 18, 2016 5:08 pm

I have not been on here much. My in ground palms in Oregon are doing great, El Nino kept them warm and watered all winter. No freeze at 46o N!
Potted palms in Oklahoma are outside and pushing spears.

The past week, W and I have been in Florida, on a road trip in the little convertible. So good to see palms growing wild and free. Sabal! Love them.

Back from Florida. It was a great trip. Lots of palms everywhere in Central Florida, less so in northern Florida.

W is talking about moving to the Orlando area.

Here in Oklahoma, most potted palms are outside. Lows the past couple of mornings were 33 oF (+1 oC) but that is alright.

In-ground palms in Oregon are fine. They never saw a freeze all winter, just lots of wind and rain from El Nino. My mother has already started fertilizing for me. :D

PS happy palm Sunday, everyone! Our big holiday is today (unless you are Orthodox, in which case it is next Sunday).

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Shoot. I'll upload to Flickr later and post that link. Flickr seems to work better.

Back in Florida. Last week, W and I brought down her horse and cat. Not an easy drive, as with the horse one must go non-stop. Motel 6 may be pet-friendly but even they don't let you bring a stallion into your room overnight. So, about 26 hours on the road. Brief breaks for diesel, soda and to pee. Horse had to pee where he stood.

Anyway, we made it. W is here for good. I fly back to Oklahoma in a couple of weeks. W keeps pointing out the palms growing in the ground down here. Sabal palmetto, of course, and also queens, jellies, Bizzy; I saw some bottle palms down the street this morning.

So, what do y'all think. Should I quit my job and move down here? Or to Oregon where I have a palm garden at 45oN latitude?

Lol, love the pee bit...

I just came back from visiting some of my palm suppliers down there... bloody hot to boot. Nice palmy place, but if I lived there, I would grow northern Willows, cedars and Canadian Maples. Of, course, I'd wrap them with Air conditioning for 4 months..

Fun! I do like the challenge.

W called me this morning to let me know about all the palms she saw on her way to work. Grrr. The way to a man's heart is through the palm heart, as the old saying goes. :-)
