A Southern Condo awaits

Post by andym » Wed Apr 09, 2014 5:05 pm

It was the headline that caught my eye from Alex Brummer the UK Daily Mail City Editor who is currently in Washington USA quote :
Snow Birds
Global Warming? What global warming? That is what they are saying in Washington. After a Winter filled with snow storms, it was still coming down only last week and long standing residents are busy seeking winter homes in Florida. Among my own friends at least three families have acquired condos there, something they vowed never to do. Post crash, sub prime mortgage bargain basement prices have made the sun even more attractive. Unquote.
In the UK we have a TV program called " A place in the Sun" and now and again A Brit couple will be filmed buying a Condo there. They're shown around these "Mansions" that cost £150,000 post sub prime that make our £300,000 properties look like rabbit hutches. The only catch is they can't stay there permanently.
Any Palms North members got plans?

Looking Texas Gulf coast myself, but a friend who moved to Florida confirms the low real estate prices there.

Andy,

More like global WARNING than WARMING.

We see that program as well, but it's never about Florida.
Generally a UK couple wants a place in Italy or France.

I spend the entire show drooling over stone homes and fabulous architectural towns (versus the West's stick homes).

plans?
Plenty...in my dreams.

You?

Barb.. Yeah its mostly about Med Countries. Me ? well I'm looking at possibly Madeira or the Canary Islands. Spain has some real bargains but Summers can be too hot especially Southern Spain. Our criteria is mainly mild Winters as my Wife feels the cold badly. We are taking a rare holiday this year to Sicily our first "Italian " holiday. The architecture there is to die for especially the city of Syracuse from the pics I've seen :D

Canary Islands sound wonderful Andy.
Yup, don't we feel the cold more as we age, especially damp cold.

Have a look at these over-priced properties in Vancouver: http://remax-selectvanbc.com/

Sicily will be a great vacation.
We have friends heading for a 4-week vac to Italy next week.
Hope they send some photos of what the rest of us are missing.

Very nice! but so expensive. If I had a quarter of the money it costs for one of those homes I could retire nicely. :D

Tell them we demand some pics!

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Ok, for price, how about this:

[sorry, bad link]

US$50,000 for a small house on a lot that is not too big to maintain but room for palms. Winters? A frost every few years, but not in most years. Anything zone 9b is safe; zone 10 with occasional protection. 15 minute drive to beach. Booming economy in the area. :D

Must've swallowed the $50K listing.

Love to read realtor links...from all over the world.
Tell them we demand some pics!
Will do, Aaron!

sorry, deleted the link.
Anyway, there ARE cheap properties in warm climates. Trick is finding a good job near one.

My wife and I are currently in Mexico scouting out a winter home. Probably just a condo with a roof top terrace. I have a job that allows me to work from anywhere. My wife isn't as lucky but we might be able to get her job to allow her to cover vacations in the summer. We shall see.

That's exciting!
Might be a 3 season home if it doesn't warm up back East.

Look forward to seeing some pics?

Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier Barb.... I've been doing a lot of overtime... to pay for one of those Vancouver properties  Shocking prices Barb  I wonder if there is Chinese Speculators there... Vancouver has a large Chinese population. This is what is happening in London with Chinese speculators buying up properties galore which is fuelling a housing bubble there. I guess with a balance of payments credit of £3.5 Trillion they have enough money to buy up the whole of London
Erik.... shame I didn't see your $50,000 Condo... I clicked on your link to see expensive Property. Perhaps it was on page 86  and with the best will in the world time is tight

Playa del Carmen about an hour south of Cancun on the Gulf of Mexico. Every kilometer closer to the ocean add 25k. We found a condo about 5k(3 miles) from the Ocean for 57k found another very nice one about 3.5k from the ocean for 115k once you get to about <2k from the ocean the price gets silly. We found a nice penthouse probably 3k from the ocean with a really nice 250 square foot rooftop terrace. For 125k but it's a bit too close to the highway and on the terrace you get some road noise. Not as relaxing as we'd want but great for a garden. The search continues...

Playa del Carmen is nice, and easy access from Cancun airport.

Exactly! One of the many reasons why we love it. We can be in the heart of Playa in under 90 minutes of touch down in the plane.

W and I watched an episode of, "House Hunters International" last night set in Playa del Carmen. It was fun for us as we knew the areas where the family was looking.

Yeah we were looking all over. We looked at one place in Playacar the gated area south of Playa del Carmen, We looked at Consitutienes and 90th (far side of the Highway) pretty far out of the way but I think in 10-15 years it might be a real growth area of Playa super cheap to buy these days. Also 7th south and about 55 or 60th (just on the other side of the Highway) It was ok the unit we'd looked at would need a a bunch of paint but it didn't really wow us. Also 34th and 40th I really liked that place but my wife really wants a roof top terrace. The last one was at 16th and 25th still under construction and only 1 bedroom units left. So we'll keep looking for now. For anyone going there I know lots of the great little hole in the wall restaurants you can eat great food at and cheap. And just lots of tips to get around there. We've been there so many times it feels like our second home.
