A letter from the uk

Post by andym » Tue Jan 22, 2013 6:35 pm

I was reading the "letters" column in the Daily Mail today and was surprised to see this comment "Bullets but no Beer"
"Quote"
The latest American School shootings reminded me of an experience I had on Holiday in Tennessee two months ago. My wife and I went into a K-Mart store and were surprised to see the "sports" section had several racks of guns, pistols and hunting rifles. including ammunition.
At the checkout the till girl stopped as she scanned my six-pack of local beer. 'I need a photo ID for that,' she said accusingly, presumably to prove I was over21.
As I 'm 64 and grey haired, I just sighed. I showed her my UK passport, which she looked at unseeingly, and said 'I need to check this' and walked off to find her Supervisor.
Then three lady members all stood there and stared at my passport. I wondered if they thought it was a forgery
Eventually, the girl returned and mumbled: 'It has to be a US passport.'
'OK' I said, ' keep your beer then' and we walked out.
Where's the logic in a country where a foreigner cannot buy a can of supermarket beer but any one of the locals can pick up half an armoury there?
Come on America, sort it out.

The letter was sent by a Man from Scotland. I was quite surprised to read this and I am wondering whether the US has become very PC (politically correct) which is so much a British Disease or has it become a 'western' one.

That letter should be forwarded to every governor in every State.

Oh...and Canada's PM too.
(Just in case he's thinking of allowing guns to be sold in Wal Marts here.)

Incredibly sad situation.

It's my freedom, and proud of it.

I have had someone break into my house when I lived in a different town. I sicked my dog on him and he was big, a very big person. He almost killed my dog, and God knows what he would have done to me (I was 7th grade) if my dog didn't stop him. He had a knife/club in his hand, hard to tell it was dark. Al I can say that will never happen to me again! I refuse to fight a stranger breaking into my house with a knife to knife combat. Or live in a cage like you have to in Mexico. There is bars on every window in Mexico, because people are not allowed to have guns. Instead of shooting people there they hack off all your limbs, and the only reason it stays there is because they know our civilians are armed.

Just my 2 cents. :x

Here's a loop hole..........someone sent me an email with this in it......................is this a real nail gun or what??

*******************************************************************
A must have in every home in America !

For everyone who would rather not have a gun in the house!

In view of the recent Supreme Court ruling, sales of this new product may skyrocket.

Washington thinks they are going to take away our guns, so check this out. I like it!

NAIL GUNS! AND, you don't even have to REGISTER them or have LICENSES for them!

AND, you don't have to worry about them being CONCEALED!

Just a LOT of good stuff to do with THIS!

Once in awhile something so totally cool comes out that even a guy who doesn't normally even

know what he'd like for Christmas would immediately ask for it:

Thank you, DeWalt!!!

<img src=http://web.mail.comcast.net/service/hom ... 534&part=2>
<img src=http://www.slipperybrick.com/wp-content ... il-gun.jpg>

New Nail Gun, made by DeWalt

It can drive a 16-D nail through a 2x4 at 200 yards.

This makes construction a breeze, you can sit in your lawn chair and build a fence.

Hundred round magazine.

Someone invades your home, just nail his ass.

Aaron, I can't even imagine how horrible that experience must've been for you at that age.
How awful.
Bill Maher has some stimulating conversations...

A couple of weeks ago, a 60+ lady in her home heard an intruder in her house.
She screamed "get outta my house", and went after him with a baseball bat.
He apparently ran before she got to him.
Canada grows some pretty mean seniors....rah rah rah!

Gonna go buy a baseball bat... :glasses9:

Or a couple of palm huts.

Wouldn't the compressor running be the give-away? :laughing7:

This is how I think when I hear the "If i had a gun in my house when i was broken into" (im not judging im saying this in the spirit o conversation)

I have a rock. It is a very, very special rock as it keeps tigers away from my house. I have never seen a tiger in my area, therefore the rock is doing its job quite well.

This is a logical falacy because I know for a fact that tigers dont live here, yet THERE ARE NO TIGERS SO IT MUST BE THE ROCK RIGHT?

THe glorification and easy access to guns, makes it more likely that someone breaking in with a gun. Pulling a gun on a robber makes it more then likely he will use his (if he has one). IT also opens up a whole other can of worms. Why should people NEED to break in? WHy should they need violence to survive as such? Where were the parents in the kids lives? Where were the cops? Where were neighbors who used to keep an eye out?

There was a story last week about a lady who was broken into, and hid in a closet with her kids. The robber opened up the closet, and she let loose a whole clip into his face and neck (yeah, somehow he survived!). If she had a knife or bat the situation would not have been any different, and as you can see, having a gun didnt prevent the robber from getting into the house, or stop her kids from seeing mommy shoot the stranger.

If anything people shouldnt feel the need to protect there home so much that they need a small armory. That is a social issue with the societys rules and culture, not just guns in themselves.

I think his/the point was, that it is easier (seemingly)to buy guns than beer!

Not to mention(although I will)that in this country, sex is more taboo in movies(at least) than violence....

but like Tim said(I think he said)dont get me started.

sex is more taboo in movies(at least) than violence
Yeah, I've noticed that too.

Yet the "experts" say violence in films/video games DOES NOT lead to violence in society.
But the folks who NEED to see a lot of porn probably aren't satisfied just seeing it.

I think those experts need to increase their medication.

Whatever happened to dignity, decency and respect...for oneself, for other people's property, for authority.
I think a part of it has to do with recent events like Wall Street crooks, who still ended up getting bonuses.
Nobody went to jail, but should have.

My local government in BC is all about fees and permits and red tape.
You can't swing a cat (pun) without a costly permit, and nobody knows where the money goes.
Into a deep government pit, so they can hire more bureaucrats.
My local water authority, a few years ago during a really bad drought, said they were going to ensure people didn't fill up their swimming pools by doing fly-overs in airplanes! And then they complain the water authority is broke, because of low revenue streams, they can't fix infrastructure.
Duh...somebody should look up "cause and effect".

Big brother is a moron.
But frankly, I'm sick of being the little brother that pays for everything.

I'd like to build a 10-foot wall around my place.
Add a plexiglass roof...presto, a GH. :happy5:

But I digress...

Food for thought.
A person can walk into a crowd with a gallon of gas and a lighter and kill many, but yet any one with a few dollar can buy as much as they want.
I don't think I will lose sleep knowing good people have gas tanks at thier homes. The crazy will find their way!

I can only see two ways of protecting your home. Bars or weapons, and I don't live in a cage. The meth user don't break in many homes around here, ask them why? They don't want to get shot! And also to comment on the lady that shot the guy in the face from when she was hidding in the closest, it must have worked? the guy lived but so did she! Her out come could have been much different if she had to protect her family with a knife. Give me a break! There is not a person here that would not use any means possible to protect thier family from someone that invades thier home. When a person breaks in your home their intentions are never good! If that ever happens, and your choice of protection was either a knife or gun I would hope for anyones family that person would protect them with a gun. And why wouldn't they.

And yes people are right why live in fear, guess what I don't!

Aaron, re the link you posted.

Guessing it's 80% that that culture is the problem; this generation won't work as hard--or as long--as their parents did with decent work to get ahead.
These kids had the same opportunities as anyone else...but chose gangs and drugs.
I feel so sorry for their parents.
I don't live in a cage

THis is what I meant by culture Aaron. You go to Japan and ask them how they protect themselves from a break an enter, they would look at you weird. Same with the UK and Canada, the swiss and almost any other country on the planet. The US has the highest number of gun crimes in the world, as well a the highest number of guns per capita. Its your culture because its in your bill of rights (which is hidden behind all too often). (im not counting unstable countries).

You are brought up in a country where guns are glorified. There is a difference between "Son, this is a gun, you use it for hunting, it is not a joke or to be played with" and " YEEHAWW brandy just turned 3, its time for her to get the new matell Barbie catallac pink remington .22" . Im not saying that as a negative, just to clarify

I live in what most people here would cal the "ghetto". It isnt the best part of town, and no one here has bars on their doors or windows, and no one that I know of owns a gun for self defence (all hunting rifles). IMO the only reason you "need" guns for defence in the us, is because you have so many guns and such easy access to them.

Why wouldnt I protect my family with a gun? Because I dont feel the need to kill someone for breaking in my house. Humans as a species already have enough of a napoleon complex, and even in my area, which is far from being "safe", I still dont feel the need to have a gun. IF they are breaking in, they are most likely looking for money or things to sell. My life, my families or even the theifs life isnt worth risk loosing over a few meager possesions in my house. IF they want to come in and steal my stuff, so be it.

Re: the lady with the gun.

Most theives dont want trouble, they want in and out. THe vat majourity of burglaries are done within 2 minutes. There is no reason to think that any theif would have the time or need to harm anyone unless they got in their way. How is shooting an unarmed person self defence? Up here self defence only goes as far as equil measure. If I shot someone, who broke into my home that was unarmed, id get charged with assult.

Again, it comes down to this question: Why should anyone feel the need to have to protect their home so much, tha they need a gun? You make a good point Aaron "the crazy will find their way" and its true. That means whether you have guns or bars on your windows or not.

Barb - I dont think its as easy as "they have the same oppertunities as us". I think Aaron can corroberate that. They may have the same choice options, but dont have as easy access to it. You ask many people in those bad situations, theyll say they didnt have a choice (even though they did). Many kids do indeed break free of that cycle but not all of them that are brought up in that culture. Most people learn almost everything by their parents, or by those to take care of them as kids, and if they are brought up in a violent community, ripe with gangs, the odds are that is what that kid will be prone to doing when they are older. Its a social issue because of lack of funding for poor families - in other words money

Look at how strict Japan's immigration policies are...you and I cannot move to Japan and become citizens.
America has always welcomed everyone, a true melting pot, to their credit.
Its a social issue because of lack of funding for poor families - in other words money
I don't agree with that, Jesse.
There were poor families always...look at subsistence farmers, the people that opened up the West, the dirty thirties, the Dust Bowl, etc.
They didn't resort to crime, they didn't hurt their neighbors by thieving from them (only the banks did that....ahem).
Drugs are responsible for all that.
And lousy parenting, made worse by 50% divorce rate.

And canada also has one of the highest influx of immagrants in the world, also one of the better crime rates:

I can see you must not have been brought up around guns, if you have than you should know people brought up around them have nothing but the highest respect for them. They are not toys, and they are not cheap! People respect them like they would a new car. People don't just shoot them off willy nelly. Most people I know keep them in locked safes! My dad would not even let us play guns when I was a kid. Get your ass whoop for pointing your finger like a gun at someone. "YEEHAWW Brandy just turned 3, she gets a doll. lol

Even bb guns are not treated like toys especially by people raised around guns! Did you know, even pointing you finger at someone like a gun can land you in jail. To say we glorify reckless use of firearms here is just plan wrong! I would say about 70-90% of the house holds here have a gun. The last muder here in this whole valley was a stabbing. And also most of the shootings here in the sate are form people from other countries that are not legal here or suicides. Also what does it matter to you in Canada. I guess if another country envades north america they wont try and cross by land through our country, my guess is they will start from the south or from the north where people are not armed.
Good luck with that.

The number of.guns per.capita.in the state.is something like 6 to 1. The fact the.sexond ammendment is brought into evey gun argument and when you start thinking of imagry associatled to the.states besides the eagle you think of guns. The military is.glorified which makes guns seem more normal.

Its true you cant say eveysingle person in the states.is.like that but in my experience and my observations the majority.f the.states.is. Its all to.easy to just blame guns which.is why i say glorifyimg them.is part of.the.cultural problem (alomg with poor healthcare lack of services for the poor and lack of good education.

Yes it sems im picking on you guns and america but this is the subject.of the convo.

I also appreciate a.CONVERSATION rather then an argument. Also sry for the.spelling im on my phone lol
