Weekend planting (sorry, no palms)

Post by TerdalFarm » Sun Jul 26, 2015 11:19 pm

This is the old, rotten hot tub that once hosted a canary date palm. Until December, 2013, brought record lows here in Manzanita. Killed it.

I don't know how long this tub will make it so I didn't want to spend a lot of money. Thus, I bought a collection of tropical-looking plants, plujs added in some plants I was growing in pots on the patio. We did not freeze at all this past winter, and with the El Nino building I do not expect a freeze this winter (at 45 oN no less!!!!).

Center is a Musa basjoo. From 12 o'clock around, I added:

Joe pye weed Eupatorium "baby joe" (so doesn't overwhelm)
New Zealand flax Phormium tenax 'rubrum'
Gunnera
South African river lilly Crinum bulbispermum
Poinstettia
Eucomis autamnalis "Wahroaneta giant"
Canna "tropical rose"
White African Lilly Agapanthus orienatalis "Albus"

Weedy butter cups (Ranunculus) were in there before I topped them with 12 cf of potting mix + 1 cf of composted chicken sh*t. I'm sure they'll come back, which is fine.
