Moving a bamboo

Post by Paul Ont » Sat Jun 13, 2015 6:46 am

Even in a northern zone 4b climate a Phyllostachys aureosulcata can get out of hand quickly. I had to move a large chunk of mine because it was running the wrong way.

One tool required is a good shovel, I've broken more than my fair share of 'cheap' shovels over the years and finally splurged on a good titanium one.

Here's the plant "Before", running on to the septic bed:

Started digging a trench around the bamboo to find all the rhizomes:

Haha, success:

Starting to get a real collection here:

Oh my that's a lot of root:

Closeup on some of the culms:
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/93526030@N02/18505364108" title="DSCF1207 by p_ont5a, on Flickr"><img src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/522/18505 ... ceb4_k.jpg" width="2048" height="1536" alt="DSCF1207"></a>

I'll post a 'finished' picture when the culms recover fro the move. They were looking a little dehydrated in their new home!

Thanks!

P.S. if anyone wants to swap some large (15 gallon) bamboo with me, I'd love to try a larger size of some of the plants that have failed here in the past.
