buddhist pine - pretty tropical looking, anyone growing it?

I went to the Belle Isle conservatory today, and I saw a mature Buddhist Pine in the conservatory. Despite its name, shaped into a tree, it fits in very well with tropical plants.
Just curious if anyone has tried growing one of these outdoors?
Websites have it ranked to zone 7

They also had Fatsia Japonica, Gold dust plant, and Cast Iron Plant growing indoors with true tropical plants.

Here are some pictures I took of it.
