New Pomegranate Plants

Post by Cameron_z6a_N.S. » Tue Feb 25, 2014 8:07 pm

I had some pomegranate plants arrive a couple of weeks ago. As you can see, the shipping process (and week-long delay at Canadian customs :x ) was not kind to them:

This experience basically forced them into dormancy, and they ended up losing all of their leaves:

The varieties which arrived this time were "Al Sirin Nar", "Alk Pust Ghermez Saveh", "Bala Miursal", "Entek Habi Saveh", "Kaim Anor", "Nikitski Ranni", "Saartuzski (Yalta)", and "Zubejda Denau". I have good expectations for the cultivar "Entek Habi Saveh" in particular; it's from a colder region of Iran, and has survived temperatures of -23 C (-6 F) unprotected. By the time my other plants arrive, I'll have around 30 cultivars in total. Maybe it will be the broadest pomegranate collection in Canada :lol:

You can see in this (blurry) photo that the cultivar "Entek Habi Saveh", along with six others, has already started to leaf out again:

They'll all bounce back with warmth and longer daylight hours, Cameron.

Mine (from seed) loses all its leaves in the cold building each winter.
Looks stone dead.
Still just a stick in a pot with a couple of weak branches because I pinched off side shoots to get a single trunk.

I still don't know what type of soil they prefer...acidic with leaf mould?

Yours look to have some age already.
Please update on their development, Cam.

Thanks for the comments!

Igor, it was interesting to hear that "ranii" means "early ripening"! Here are some of the other varieties that I'm getting in the spring. Let me know if you recognize any other words!

"Afganski" (obviously from Afghanistan), "Agat", "Asperonski Krasnyj", "Desertnyi" (I know this is "dessert"), "Dorsht 5 Hahanshahi Khoramabad", "Eight Ball" (obvious), "Kaj-acik-anor", "Kazake", "Lyubimy" (I know that this means "favourite"), "Medovyi Vahsha" (I know this means something like "honey"), "Mejhos 6269", "Parfianka", "Phil's Sweet" (obvious), "Salavatski", "Surh-Anor", "Tabestani Malas Biranden Saveh", "Vkusnyi", etc.

"Afganski" (obviously from Afghanistan) - right it means "from Afghanistan, or Afghan";
"Agat" means "Agate";
"Asperonski Krasnyj" - means "Red from Apsheron peninsula" (Azerbaijan);
"Desertnyi" (I know this is "dessert") - right, means "for dessert";
"Dorsht 5 Hahanshahi Khoramabad" - no idea 'cos it's Farsi;
"Eight Ball" (obvious) - :lol:;
"Kaj-acik-anor" - Azeri language. A last word means "pomegranate", a second - "having a sharp flavor", as well as a dozen of other means, but "piquant" is more obvious. Most likely a whole name means "piquant pomegranate from Kaj";
"Kazake" - means "Cossack";
"Lyubimy" (I know that this means "favourite") - you are right absolutely!;
"Medovyi Vahsha" (I know this means something like "honey") - means "honey taste fruit from the Vakhsh river valley (Tajikistan)";
"Mejhos 6269" = uncertain;
"Parfianka" - means "fruit from Parthia" (Iran-Turkmenistan)
"Phil's Sweet" (obvious)
"Salavatski" - Salavat is an Arabic word so many geographic point in muslim countries might be called "Salavat". Salavatski means "from Salavat" according to Russian grammar;
"Surh-Anor" means "Pomegranate from Surh" (Surh - region in south of Uzbekistan);
"Tabestani Malas Biranden Saveh" - Farsi, have no idea:
"Vkusnyi" - Yammi! :lol:

PS BTW "Anor or Anar" means "pomegranate" both either in Farsi or Turkish

Thanks for all of the help, Igor! I figured that the names in Farsi might be tough to translate :lol: However, I know that any names with "Saveh" mean that the plants originate from the Saveh region of Iran, and some of the hardiest pomegranates (Entek Habi Saveh, Tabestani Malas Biranden Saveh, etc) come from that area.
