Kiss H's Gravel Bed goodbye

Post by lucky1 » Sat Mar 09, 2013 4:20 pm

H hates weeds so he gravels everything on top of that horrible landscape cloth.
Had my eye on that area for a while because it gets so hot in summer.

Yawn:

No yawning now: :bounce:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8542493989/" title="001 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8508/8542 ... 9a63_c.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="001"></a>

While he was away today, planted Chamaerops humilis cerifera (nearest), unknown trunking yucca (hope it's an elata), one of the brahea armata twins (tented) and the unknown agave/furcraea.

another y.rostrata, 2 big mama yuccas yet to plant in there.

Plants sure looked bigger when the pots were above ground

Good for you Barb. It will be a wonderful gravel bed of plants. I am so happy to see you have ground planted your Brahea armata. I checked in on mine outside today and it looks wonderful. It's box will come off in one or two weeks.

Thanks folks...gonna get a lot more full than that.
Saving a spot for the Nannorrhops arabica silver. :P

Jesse, nope, my dog is a magnet for cactus thorns.
Tired of having Tweezers always with me.

Aaron, still more yuccas will go in there :D

Adam, glad to hear your B.armata is doing great; look forward to seeing it out in the air again.
I have 2 (the twin to this one), so will see how much space is left.

In my mind I already see this area in 10 years :glasses8:

You could build a green-house over the top just like Jim does. :D

But make sure you leave a place for a lounge chair.

Too bad you can't get some little hardy barrel cactus to plant in there-you would love the flowers Barb!

That will make an excellent desert bed for sure!

Flowering stuff isn't big on my list.
Except if they're palms/yuccas

Barb... talking of Brahea Armata, how is the plant that you stripped all the soil off the roots... still alive and kicking?

Yup, Andy, that's one of the twins, looked fine with the spear pushing before I planted it in the ground.
At least yesterday  before it snowed

You mean this Tough Love treatment, took all soil off, soaked roots in Dimethoate 480, and then soaked leaves?

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8084303784/" title="007 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8046/8084 ... c40f_c.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="007"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8084305314/" title="006 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8472/8084 ... 9c66_c.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="006"></a>

It looked OK all winter:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8126415249/" title="009 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8048/8126 ... 32d4_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="009"></a>

Here's the twin to it, still in the cold building, the spear is pushing.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8215091566/" title="007 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8345/8215 ... 101f_c.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="007"></a>

So...unless B.armatas take two years to die, didn't seem to hurt them...yet.
Heck, maybe Dimethoate was a fertilizer too.

But the cold ground I planted it in last week just might...

Looks good! I like the look of gravel beds as long as they have plants in them. Especially desert plants. :D

Thanks Jeff, yeah, me too.
I enjoy watching the Arizona desert golf tournaments for that reason.
Such an attractive landscape from -- well -- grass.

Tim, looking forward to learning its ID.

Jim, you're right, that's nature's artwork for sure.
I'll continue to enjoy seeing yours

Jim,
...been called lots of things, but never little. :clown:

Not planting any more in that gravel bed right now...cooldown coming starting tonight.
Dammit (again).

But at least weather's better than what has befallen Europe lately.
Those poor people.

The weather channel said that if all the cars involved in crashes during recent snowstorms in Germany were lined up, it would be 1,000 kms of carnage.
Awful.
