Ugly, but does it ever work!

Post by lucky1 » Fri Feb 01, 2013 2:51 pm

Finally got some sun today after 3 weeks of fog/cloud.

The leaf-filled black plastic garbage bags, at the base of 2 Washy protections, sure heat up on a sunny day.
Covered in clear plastic.

Remote thermometer is reading 18C 64F inside there! :D

Like I said, it's ugly.

Hope no-one notices it so I don't get a citation for "unsightly premises" from the muni

Barb,

Do you ever worry about too much mositure in the black plastics?

3 weeks of clouds/fog? That's aweful. At least your protection works!

too much mositure in the black plastics
Yeah, that occurred to me, too, Mike.
I opened them up on a mild Dec. day and they looked OK inside.

But there's only 2 rows of black plastic leaf-filled bags, with lots of gaps.
Near the top there's fibreglass insulation, hopefully that'll absorb some of the moisture.

This is the first year I've used leaf-filled bags, so it's a work in progress.
But the thermocube has only turned on 3 or 4 times this winter.

Yes, Tim, January's weather has been REALLY DEPRESSING...I've never seen it so gloomy for so long. :angryfire:

I would say yes, if sunny didnt mean cold. Sun means high pressure, and that usually means cold air is funneled in from the arctic. Clouds hold heat in, and usually means low pressure - warm air from down south.

Your protection looks GOOD Barb! I worry about the moisture with my Washy too,I might have to take a peek at it if the weather ever gets about freezing around here. The last few days have been miserable with highs only around 8F. Not the mention my biggest enemy the WIND!!!
At least January is over even though February isn't much a cake walk around here either :(

Ya know barb, if you wrapped them in furs/skins they would look like teepee. It would also keep them warm :P

Ain't that the truth, Mike...
And today...F O G A G A I N :angry5:
Sun means high pressure,
Yeah I know, but day after day of valley fog and I just want to kick something.
Or go live in the basement with my palm seeds.
Furs and skins, you nut, Jesse !
Your protection looks GOOD
Thanks Glenn :D
You could probably take a quick peek with your camera.
I stood on my tiptoes and aimed the camera into an opening I had made at the top.
Got the weirdest photos until I could figure out where I was aiming...thought the Washy was gone...
Camera couldn't "see" down to the bottom where the leaf bags form 2 circular (kinda) rows, probably fell over.

Anyway this Washy looked OK but not great;
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8335311860/" title="010 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8363/8335 ... 5337_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="010"></a>

Other one about the same:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8334259041/" title="007 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8357/8334 ... 3ea3_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="007"></a>

But at least we don't look like this anymore (early a.m.) photo.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8272057679/" title="003 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8484/8272 ... fe2c_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="003"></a>

Or like this...when my dog didn't have to squat to pee:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8362243223/" title="006 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8517/8362 ... 06a6_c.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="006"></a>

OK, that was wayyyyy too depressing.
Gonna finish off with an August photo:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7896834078/" title="006 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8039/7896 ... 51ef_c.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="006"></a>

Ahh....thank goodness for photos.
Or some of us :? would go insane.

Hi Barb,

the string/rock are doing their job!......it's still working. :D

My wife purchased a new vacuum and it was sitting in front of the TV for 2 days before I noticed it and I asked her if she got a new vacuum today? She let me know that it's been there fore a couple days already.

String/rock...due to the shape and slippery plastic, it was awkward to get the string to "sit/stay".
in front of the TV for 2 days before I noticed it
Point made :boxing: it's a gender thingy.
W was hoping you'd take it for a test drive.
