(Humour alert) Cryostachys outdoors?

Post by TerdalFarm » Wed Nov 16, 2011 4:55 pm

As we all fret over how to keep needle palms, dwarf palmettos, washies, windmills etc alive through winter, I bet we all imagine how nice it would be to live somewhere warm where we didn't have these worries.
Or would we?
I stumbled across this hilarious thread on another palm forum by someone wondering how to overwinter Cyrtostachys renda, also known as red Sealing Wax Palm. My favorite reply: "don't hold a cold beer near it"
 :verycold:

So, as you protect your palms, remember: it could be worse. Pop the top on a cold one and laugh along.

That's a 10 on the humour scale, Erik, for PN members

The cold beer reply says it all for Cyrtostachys...I didn't even get ONE seed to germinate in the "hot mud" seedling pot beside the woodstove.
I must've scared the seeds by looking at them 10 times a day.

I'm convinced that if we lived on the equator, we'd be trying to grow a Colorado Blue Spruce... :headbang:

If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.

Erik, I was reading this post the other day, and thought the same thing! These people worry about keeping some of the most tropical species alive over the winter, while we worry about having the most cold-hardy palms even survive under protection!!!
