Christmas Palm. Anyone have any luck with these indoors?

Discuss palms you grow inside.

Christmas Palm. Anyone have any luck with these indoors?

Post by sashaeffer » Thu Dec 05, 2013 11:56 am

Pic is of largest one I have(bought it this size this summer 2013) Loved being outside, fast grower. I knew they were touchy inside.

Sits in front of Big West facing window and in room with tall ceiling with a Halogen ceiling light that I leave on all day.

House temp 68/70 deg

Humidity around the palm 55%

All other palms in room doing just fine(except one other smaller Christmas Palm)

Needless to say I don't water any of them like I did when outside. Killed off a beautiful Foxtail Palm last winter by over watering it.

Check out pics and let me know if anyone can identify the browning of the fronds. Brown and crispy!

Nice Specimen.

I find Xmas plams have a hard time switching from in doors to out and nice versa. I have had one a grown from seed that's never been outside is very healthy (but no where near as big as your tree mine is only about 12" Tall). All my others that has transitioned back and forth have burnt tips and brown spots even some yellowing. I just fertilized some last night I'll see if that brings them around..

My six seedlings all croaked from being in the barely-heated building last winter.
Should've put them in the warm house instead.

The worst affected pic, Scott, looks more like a disease/fungus than just coming indoors.
Some of the pics here might help: http://flrec.ifas.ufl.edu/palm_prod/palm_problems.shtml

BTW, my big foxtail is now toast too.

Cool link Barb, thanks...

It could be simply transitional shock as the newest fronds look fine(so far) I don't water it like I did when outside and I NEVER mist it...Like I've mentioned I've done more damage to a palm by misting. The smaller triple Christmas palm next to the big one has the same thing, yet no other palm in that same room has any issues including..

Kentia
Coconut Palm
Unknown tall Fishtail AND clumping fishtail palm
Triangle Palm
Ribbon Palm
Metal Palm

On another note, you know how much I love Foxtail palms and I killed my big one last winter. I have two seedlings that I germinated and have always been inside the house and they look GREAT. Deep green, steady growers......look much better than already grown seedlings I've ordered and have growing inside.

Then indoors is where Foxtails should remain.
I have none left, including all the ones I germinated a few years ago.

But the Christmas Palm seedlings died right away, whereas the others lasted a couple of years.

Last year I bought a double that I wanted separate. This is the thread:
viewtopic.php?t=5114&highlight=

I did separate them and put them in an almost soilless potting mix (bark, perlite, turface and a little red worms castings)

I brought them in my office over the winter where they have only 1-2 hours of sun, but they are in front of a window. I learned from last year when I killed a bottle palm and I water them only once a week even though the soil retains almost no water atoll.

They are pushing up new spears and they look great. I'm also the talk of the office with my plants :-)

Tavi, those are FAB-U-LOUS
Well done!

My seedlings all croaked.
If I ever get more seeds, will use your soil-less recipe.

Thank you Barb.

I started to play with Al's gritty mix, but it was too heavy to move the pots around. (I still have a few lemon trees in it)

So I replaced the granite with perlite. I have a few indoor palms in it and they are all doing great: enough humidity but no stagnant water.

still have a few lemon trees in it
and how are the lemons doing?

I've got a 6-foot tall grapefruit incl pot and the bloody thing almost dies every winter.
Drops all its leaves, never a blossom on it come spring.
Spends all summer growing leaves back, only to repeat the process come September.
Gotta be the soil.
or me.
