Treat them like Bananas for the most part. Cannas I just cut flush with the ground, spray or sprinkle some fungus control on the cut ends and bury it all in mulch.

I had a bunch of saw dust type mulch from grinding some tree stumps, so buried them in that for the winter....so well see in a few weeks how that worked.

Whoa... wait a minute. You over winter CANNA in zone 4 and 5? How the hell is that even possible? I have never heard them surviving beyond zone 6 or 7, and thats with tons of multch!

Mike - Canna are usually thought to be a bog plant. This is apparently only true to certain species. Over the winter they need to be kept dryish, or they rot. IF you can keep the ground dry (good drainage, and a tarp or some moisture protection) they shouldnt go to mush where you are.

I have a lot of large/tall red cannas and shorter green varieties (leaves I mean) I regularly dig them up each year and they have easily given me over 500 bulbs this past year, not exaggerating...They are insane how they multiply!

Ribbon Fan Palm bought today for $34.95. Going to keep in in green house for what we have left of winter. Lime green pot is old Monrovia pot I painted and just put pot of Ribbon palm in for stability, and may keep it in there when I have it outside this season.

Good looking palm, nice size at that price Scott.

For others (like me who didn't know) a Ribbon Palm is a Livistonia decipiens, kinda halfway between the fan and feather characteristics of Livistonia.

If you put it where it's not too windy, the "ribbons" (which it gets as it ages) won't get shredded.

I had read that when I studied about it on line. Not sure where I will put it yet, but since they only had one didn't want to pass it up.

You know, buy now worry about where it will go later!

Ok, The nursery that I get most of my palms at now just sends me a email or calls me when new stuff comes in because they know I'm "easy" when it comes to adding to my collection.

Last week bought another Triangle Palm there and then got email that they had a few Canary Island Date Palms arrive as well...so off I went. Both palms were just $39.00 and the brown pots are close outs from last year at 50% off. They are stone/poured concrete so nice and stable for outside.

Scott,
Nice looking palms for only 39 bucks.
I love Phoenix...

Love your landscaping; you've done a great job.

Good to have pots that are heavy, but one thing you have to watch out for is that lime from concrete can leach into the soil.
Most pots are glazed only on the outside, so leaching occurs from the raw inside.
With time, that can change the pH towards alkaline, which many palms don't like.
But epsom salts can help reverse that.
they know I'm "easy" when it comes to adding to my collection.
Good! They could just deliver one to your door each time, saving you the trip.

You're fortunate to have a decent nursery nearby that stocks more than one type of palm.

Barb,

These Brown pots are pores so water leeches through them easily. They aren't glazed at all.

Red Sealing Wax Palm Seedlings

Post by sashaeffer » Tue Apr 10, 2012 10:35 am

Thought I would give these a try...I know they can be tough, but I like a challenge.

You can probably tell by the pic that they are in a mini greenhouse, and cups are in germination tray with heat, as well as water since they need to be kept moist all the time. Also bought 25 seeds and will start them very soon.

Fertile soil, with lots of organic matter. DOnt use woodchips as multch, I would personally use compost and some dried leaves. Woodchips stend to suck the notrogen out of the soil.

I used some potting soil, peat moss, sand, composted manure. With lava pebbles at bottom of pot to help with drainage.

Can buy smaller Mexican Fan Palms here cheap ($18.00) so planted one in the ground along south side of garage along with Windmill Palm, Needle Palm and Banana. Hope it makes it through the winter. Palm on far right is Chinese Fan palm I'm trying as a die back perennial.

Yea, Penny there ordered a bunch so I've bought 3 so far. Two I transplanted into slightly larger pots and buried them in the ground and will pull up late fall and over winter in greenhouse or garage. This last one I planted surrounded by heat tape and will protect much like I did the Windmill next to it. We'll see how it does! This last winter wasn't a true test since we never really had any snow, and never really got all that cold.

Adonidia...nice palm outstanding price.

Refresh my memory...Veitchia is a Christmas palm, yet some Adonidia pics say Christmas palm too.

But it doesn't look like it.
Looks like my Spindle Palm.

Good buy no matter what it is.

ok, so any advice what to do with it (not to die)? First, I've never heard of adonidia palm before, so I had to google on my cel, and I was quite happy when I found Christmas palm, but I think you're right, looks very much like the spindle palm. The trunk at the base is somehow triangular.

In the same trip I also got a very nice bottle palm, just slightly smaller than this one.

Looks liek a triangle, spindle or bottle palm to me.

Adonidia is the new classification of Veitchia (taxonomy is constantly changing). Here is a pic of the "christmas palm"

http://rarepalmseeds.com/pix/AdoMer.shtml

Notice the difference on the trunk, and the more arching, thicker leaves then your palm.. Adonidia have rings that go up the trunk, and a very bright green part underneath the leaf crown (forget the proper name)

Tavi treat your Spindle (Hyophorbe verschaffeltii) the same as any heat loving palm.

They`re same family as the bottle palms.

Mine gets only brief morning light, and water warmed in the sun (never cold from the tap).

Lots of water when it`s really hot and, of course, excellent drainage.

Now, I know that you're supposed to avoid picking up Majesty Palms, but I couldn't resist this up for $5 a few days ago:

Image

This exotic plant hobby is becoming dangerous, and I'm going to run out of room at some point! My Majesty Palm hasn't died yet (although I expect it will soon enough). In fact, it has grown.

Image

I've got an experimental plan to try and keep this thing alive that includes lots of water, stays outside as long as temperatures are above 40 deg. F, and regular mistings while inside. Any other tips? I've heard of some people just letting the pot sit in a tray of water. Would that help?

Also, should I try to separate the two plants into separate pots?

picking up Majesty Palms,
I'd buy one too at that price...wow that's cheap.

robocaesar, it's only when you drive to another state to buy palms that it gets dangerous.
You're still safe...for a while.

I've never bought a Majesty but a few folks said keep it cool to minimize spider mites.
Sounds like you're doing it right.

So far it's doing quite well! It has put out almost 3 new fronds since I got it over 2.5 months ago. (There are 2 plants in the pot) I watch carefully for any signs of an infestation and I water the plant with a little bit of hydrogen peroxide frequently as well. Occasionally, I'll squirt some hydrogen peroxide into the crown too in case anything is rotting down there. When it's above 50 degrees or so outside, I put it out on the lawn for some fresh air.

Ya, know I have two Majesty Palms here. One is smaller and have had for a couple of years. Seems to get more "fuller" than grow tall. Sits outside in the summer and now in the green house for the winter and it's shown the most growth in the greenhouse.

Other is a much larger double that I bought last winter for $2 at Lowes on clearance. One whole plant was separated and had fallen over in the grow pot. Transplanted into bigger pot with stake holding up the broken side and let it sit outside in the summer. I watered them ALOT, gave them more fertilizer than the other palms and it seemed the more water I gave it the faster they grew. Big Majesty is in mater bathroom sitting in jacuzzi tub so it gets a lot of humidity in there and I still give it a lot of water and it's growing like crazy. I don't think they are hard to keep alive they just take a lot more care than others. I keep a 5 gallon bucket of water in the tub for added humidity, and the water seems to be a magnet for fungus gnats!

I hope they sink like a stone...the buggers.

Never noticed that when I had buckets of water near the woodstove in basement.
Right beside my germinating area.
The buggers ended up all over the house...flying up our noses when we were eating dinner.

That Majesty looks good Scott.
Good work.

Very nice, Scott! Majesty palms are one of my favorite palms when taken care of. That's good that you're keeping your double in a humid environment. I can't do that at the moment, but the humidity usually hovers around 50% at this time of year in the room I keep my 2 palms in. Temperatures get up to the upper 60s/lower 70s during the day, and mid 50s at night (This is in a mostly unheated room).

As for fungus gnats, the war seems to never end! I've been using fly paper lately and it's really cut back on the number of gnats I'm seeing. Still, I can't completely eradicate them since many of my house plants just love moist soil.

Scott - You were trying the chinese fan palm outside right?

I left mine outside until early november. Saw a few weeks below 0C, and at least 4 nights at -7C or below. It was in a large pot, in the middle of my yard, unprotected.

90% of the foliage is gone, but the leaf spear was green, and so were the leaf "stems", so I didnt give up. 2 weeks ago, it started regrowing.

I think that might give you some home for yours!!

Yes, Canadianplant have some Chinese fan palms and a couple of "Cat" palms in the ground. All but one(one cat palm) close to foundation of house and covered with three bags of mulch(bag and all) stacked on them. We'll see in the spring how they did. The one Cat palm that isn't next to foundation is next to a shed, and I poured a bunch of cedar mulch over the crown and then have a semi transparent plastic barrel covering it. No sun hits that barrel so doesn't go through temperature spikes like all the others experience.

I'll post pics this spring good or bad....on how all of them fared. None of them were over $12 to buy so not an expensive experiment.

Time of year to check your Lowe's clearance plant rack....

Post by sashaeffer » Mon Jan 14, 2013 6:49 pm

Local Lowe's store last week told me that their "new" palms and plants shipments were coming in this week. Since they always get the same stuff I was more interested in what they were gong to mark down so stopped by there tonight and had nice supply of 5-6ft tall "cat" palms for $2 each! so bought two of the three they had...along with a Pony Tail Palm to replace the one I had that I over watered and killed. :(

I'll keep the cat palms in the garage with other palms I have out there and plant them in the ground in the spring and use them as an annual.

So check you local Lowe's store for these bargains!

Marked down to TWO BUCKS?
Incredible!

We never see deep discounts like that.
And no Lowe's yet in Western Canada...so waiting.

Bet W isn't speaking to you anymore...

All Lowes have a area all year around that they sell plants and palms at steep discount because they feel something is wrong with it, or just just moving out old stock as new arrives. This is the time of year they start discounting palms specifically. Home Depot doesn't do the same, they just throw them away when I asked.

Wife loves a bargain doesn't want anymore palms in the house since were cramped for space now overwintering so many inside. These two will go out in the garage in a couple of days and over winter the balance of winter there.

Heck, I have two palms I ordered from Phil at Jungle Music(Blue Hesper and Blue Pindo palm) that I'm having him hold onto until we get some warmer weather in March to ship them to me. That way I can buy online when he has specials between now and then and have them all shipped at the same time.
