Congrats on your Cocos Barb!!!

At HD no less. Unbelievable. My HD has never had a coconut. :( Though the last 2 years in May they get a big shipment of large palms. That is where I got my large Phoenix ,few Queens and Christmas palms.

Barb now there is dedication to your palms. Got anything else that needs to be washed and drip hung to dry near those palms  I have humidifier in my tropicals room :D . Don`t underestimate the power of strong lighting and humidity for the cocos. That may be more important than K nutrients right now IMO. Erik yes I was refering to pot planting. Knowing how hot you get in OK.during the growing season. The roots of your palms and plants sure could use the cooler ground to make it through . Don I have a fish tank and use the filter sludge to fertilize my house plants occasionaly. You sure can tell which ones I didn`t get to weeks later.

Your palm pro, looks to be excellent food for your palms, dripping rain coat was a great idea as well, even if you did a dog shake in front of your palm would only been better!!!LOL

John you know when it comes to using the fish poop!!!!!

You know I have never ever counted the amount of fish I have, never occurred to me,but I haven't noticed any eggs or babies yet!

With 200 palms, some scraping the ceiling, John, you could NOT do without a humidifier.

Years ago (youngsters, go to sleep) we used to have one of those big plastic rectangular "boxes" on wheels, with a sponge drum that turned on an axis over a tank to which you added water every couple of days. The drum would turn and the motor would "send" moist air through the vents.

Man, talk about MOLD! SCUM, ALGAE... :protest:

...isn't that how Legionnaire's Disease started? (well, not HERE).

a month later, a frond!

Misting it twice a day seemed to get it going...a month later, Cocos pushed new leaf:

Beautiful!
I've been into misting the past year. I had the misting system outside last summer, and use a spray bottle this winter.
Maybe I'll even try Cocos again....

The LED is on 24/7, casts an eerie glow at night.

The Cocos will get a shock when it sees REAL sunshine 8) and will need a lot of acclimatizing.
If it's still alive when summer arrives

Barb I think you are on the right track with that Cocos nucifera. The extra lighting, humidity, fert. is key. They need more than eight hours of light to thrive indoors. The roots must be warm to get a new frond? Look forward to seeing it outside.

Thanks folks.
Basement floor is concrete, nice and warm from woodstove, and I can mist plants to run-off, with no damage to the floor. Yippeeee!
It's like a rainforest down there :P

Pretty palm I'd say :) I brought one germinated nut from Tobago and it is already pushing second leaf under lamp. I'm giving it constant heat and it is moving.

But how is your bottle palm?

Hi Corrosion
How nice you were able to bring the Cocos nut home with you.
What is your heat source for the palm?
Can you post a pic of your Cocos?

During cool spring weather, I'll put the Cocos pot on my germinating mat to keep the roots warm.

Thanks for asking about my Bottle Palm.
It's doing better after flushing/leaching out toxic fertilizer levels.
But old fronds will never recover from the frizzled ugly look, they'll be cut off when totally brown.
New spear is over a foot long. :D

Hi again. It was quite a trouble, the customs asked a lot about it in the airport. I lied I bought it from the market :) Actually I dug it out myself from the beach. Theres a million coconuts there so no worrys about dangered species thing :) I brought some seedlings of christmas palm adonidia aswell, they have grown slow so far. So here I am back in the cold place ( at the moment). Good thing is that my trachy survived this years winter due to my 60 w lamp and proper cover-even no leaf damage. I have lots of spindles growing so a bottle palm would be a nice addition. But hard to get in here.
I'll add picture of my coconut after just picking it and placing it in the empty coke bottle.

They believed you when you said it came from a nursery in that coke bottle????
Hilarious...they probably wanted one too

Congratulations on your Trachy winter protection!
Glad you folks had a better winter in Europe than last year.

Will look forward to seeing your additional pictures of Adonidia.

Corrosion,
great story. I was tempted to do the same thing in January when I saw that Cocos were downright weedy on islands off the coast of Belize, but worried about US customs. I'll remember your "market" story!
Now, just don't ask me too much about the Adonidia/Veithcia I have germinating....

I carried it without the soil-it had only one taproot. I doubt they wanted one because eventually the coconut palm seemed to be the most boring palm in the world while staying there. The place was a jungle, it had no proper airport and the plane ( Boeing- 767) was certainly too large for that landing field. So the main problem with the coconut was in Tobago airport but nothing serious. In Barbados and Frankfurt nobody cared. I should have packed it into my large bag so the communication would have been easier in the customs without the coconut :) They check only handluggage. The adonidias are too small for the camera-since I don't have macro lenses :D I think this years winter was somehow worse considering it was colder but the duration of cold was way shorter. So I can't count on mild winters-only proper protection will be the key to success. Erik so you brought lots of seeds of adonidias? I brought too but after cheking them at home they seemed old and useless-I threw them away. Luckily I collected 4 seedligs in the forest under the tree. 2 seeds of some kind of Pritchardia have also germinated, let's see have they manage to survive.

I had no luck with Pritchardia hillebrandtii seeds, none came up.
Good luck with yours, and the young Adonidia :D

Hi Barb,

I have the same problem when I see plants in stores.......one or two plants always seem to get into the shopping cart. PS, it's a beauty!
