How some things from outside, are doing inside....

Post by canadianplant » Wed Dec 29, 2010 7:24 am

Just an update. I have a few things inside for the winter, ( 2 colocasia esculenta, 2 alocasia odora, a pot of super super small gloriosa lily, my musa basjoo, and the cordyline), my canna and calla are over wintering ini a tub in the basement, im going to have to check on em . Everything seems to be doing ok inside, except the colocasia, which have one leaf, and will only hold onto one leaf at a time. They are quite lanky, im assuming trying to reach for the sun....

The basjoo has been the biggest suprise. Its put out 3 leaves since november, and although the top is quite skinny, it is growing faster each day ( im assuming the sun getting higher in the sky has already effected it)

theres some pics of soem cacti that paul was nice enough to send.. They seem to be doing alright. Theres soem pics of my seedlings of chamedorea lanceolata, and dypsis aranarum, both are thought to only survive in cultivation.

How about taking a minute to experiment with
posting the picture directly,it shouldn't take to
much time to figure it out,if it does try
switching to photobucket,I like photobucket because
I can post big pictures-good luck!

I have an account with flikr and photobucket. They both have limits. My camera is high def, so the pics take up alot more space. so even on its lowest setting i can only upload 20 pics a month.... I can try the long way, and see if i can post the URL from the posts i already made....

I set my camera to the lowest setting (640 x 480) if I know i'm taking snapshots to share here. That gives me, effectively, unlimited uploads to picassaweb.

My pics are all on Flickr.
There was a "policy change" back a while ago that made posting pics a bit more difficult (simply because Yahoo, the new management, insisted on "back clicks" to Flickr, versus virtually free, no-credit use of their pipe).
That was until a "hole" was found :P.
Now back to normal, can post pics to my heart's content, any size I choose.

canadianplant, hope you don't take this as serious criticism...but...you've taken the term "keep dry in winter" to heart.
That advice is for plants in cold environs...outdoors or in barely-insulated buildings.
In a warm house, plants need watering in winter.
Less than summer, admittedly, but they do need watering.
Especially when the soil pulls away from the side of the pot

Still friends? :hmph:

Never barb, dont worry about it.

Most look worse then they are. The alocasia top 1/8 of an inch was dry but any lower then that was wet. I usualy never let things get that bad except by mistake. That pot of dypsis was one of them ( i deserve crap for it barb i know LOL). I can assure you very few things go DRY.

Some of the soil cracks liek that foro some reason, even when it isnt dry all the way down. I water every week, and mist every day. I have almost 100 house plants, some are hard to keep track of. Ive lost some plant by watering by what the soil looks like. I always check it, and if it isnt dry halfway down my figer for most foot tall pots, half that for smaller.... i dont water.

If im not sure what a plant needs, i water once a week and a half, and adjust it to that. My musa and elephant ears needed way more water then i expected, same with my papayrus, all need as much water as they did in the summer for me.

please never feel bad about giving me any advice. You guys have more experience then me, i would never take any advice given negativly. I actualy appreciate the concern :D

If im not sure what a plant needs
When I buy a new plant, or get seeds, I usually look it up on the internet, both images and text.
Pictures of it in mature form in habitat generally give a good idea of its needs.
i.e. Nypa and Cyrtostachys palms grow in/adjacent to water, obviously need more water than, say, Nannorhops.
Same with your papyrus, grows in water in Egypt, albeit not stagnant water.
Even knowing that, my papyrus gave up the ghost last year; just couldn't handle our strong desert winds when it was sitting in the pond. :?
You guys have more experience then me
Some of us (ahem) are so old :? :? we've killed more plants than you're growing

Hey- Give me some credit... I may not be 'old' but I have killed more than my share of plants!
Also, what is the cut off for old? I am fast approaching 30... In a few years...

fast approaching 30.
Thirty? Sheesh, you're still poopin' yellow, as H would say

You don't baby your plants, which is probably good, but I'd loosely put some more chunky mulch over that S.minor.
The Y.nana looks fab-u-lous.

You're at 6C ????? not much winter yet for you folks.
Well, you can see my current temp
But I'm doing my part for the economy keeping BC Hydro billing department busy.

I have children your age (anyone else here?)
But I make so many mistakes I feel like a toddler in the garden--and have as much fun.
For example, I planted Sabal minor in September.

My Goodness, while approaching my 49 I had been killing the tons of replaced office plants while have been working for the interiorscaping company in Toronto in the middle of the 2000th. My house would not fit all the plants we were replacing... Nevertheless many of them have been saved and adopted either in my house or by my friends.
