I couldn't resist this $40 gem at HD today:
Nice to see a Canadian HD stocking something other than Majesty Palms.

I like the Fishtail Palm. Sometimes HD will surprise ya'. Never seen a fishtail palm around here. Good luck and good growing.

Thanks Erik and Kent!

It'll be tough to provide the humidity Fishtails demand...the best spot would be where the family has 20-minute showers :?

Each winter I develop an "obsession" with buying exotic palms and drive ~100 miles looking for a new one.
Then in summer I run out of places to put them where they won't fry.
Strange disease...
H is soooooo tolerant.

100 miles for a palm tree run seems perfectly normal to me, especially during winter. pack a lunch and enjoy the drive.

Yes, 100 miles each way is what it took to get my Sabal "Lousiana."
Kent and I have to drive all the way down to Texas for a really good selection. Maybe next year....

The home depot in calgary blew me away. They had tables, and tables of ensete, and musa species, not to mention HUGE selection of super tall palms and other house plants. Ivenever seen a home depot carry such nice plants

This yeaer the one here finally woke up and brought in a few palms. I got a super nice looking Phoenix Roebelenii from there. I shouldve gotten the nice 4 foot bamboo palm too,.. i dont drive so i didnt have a way of bringing it home :(

Calgary?
A little too far to drive this time of year ... darn.
But I'll talk to our HD people and find out WHEN their stuff arrives.
It'd be nice to be the first person to "get into the nursery truck".

Bamboo (seifreizii) palm is fabulous--and you're fond of bamboo, I recall.
The palm stems get the papery bamboo-looking sheaths.
And they bloom like crazy compared to other palms, three times this summer for me!

<img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3007/302 ... 2d5e4c.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="DSC01737" />

But, no, you can't leave a seifreizii out in winter!

Lovely palm.
I think I might be the first here to try leaving any Chameadorea out for the winter, and only then in a heated, insulated palm hut. And the most cold hardy, trunkless species at that.
But yes, they flower well--I got three off of each of mine this Summer! :D

I have a chameadorea cataractarum, it bloomed once for me. When you find the right spot it gorws well.

Eric, You should try the arborescent type of radicalis.... C Microspadix ( also called bamboo palm), can take -8C for prolonged periods unharmed, id try that as well. It needs a sheldered location in shade......

Nothing on my radicalis seeds yet

I tried to order a C. microspadix from Junglemusic but Phil was out. Maybe next year.
I want to see if I can keep these C. radicalis alive first.
I might also just get a cat palm and plan on it living in a pot. I have two other Chameadorea species in pots in my collection of "indoor palms." Accurate, as the potted ones had to come inside for Summer here!

Exactly...... I have about, 13 seedlings of chamedorea lanceolata (ivowowo palm), and 6 seedlings of dypsis arenarum. Rare, and yes once again sexy palms LOL. IF my radicali sprout that will bring me to.... 4 kinds of Chameadorea. Then again i got like 100 houseplants......... and growing, i think i buy a plant every week or 2 now.....

OK John, good news.

That last "Fishtail" was there, so I got it for you.

Wondering why I put Fishtail in quotes?

The HD nursery supplier, Rainbow Greenhouses (from the Coast) rep Debbie was there.
I told her I bought the twin to this "Fishtail" last week.
She said "that's a Foxtail, so was the other one, that was on the invoice from Costa Farms."
F O X T A I L S- S E V E N- F E E T- T A L L :occasion5:

I told Debbie about Palms North and she said "Oh yes, I've been on there looking stuff up!"

I also suggested HD bring in some Needle Palms, they'd grow in the Okanagan for sure.

Barb
PS--I'll deliver it when the weather warms...in 2025

That is great news!
Very cool 8)
I grumble about HD sometimes (e.g., when they left 100+ palms outdoors last winter, all of which died) but they are so large that they can get things shipped. I got my needle palms from them, for example, quite cheaply. So, keep working that new connection. --Erik

Barb that`s great you picked up that palm for me.Thanks. What was Debbie`s response to Needle palms being shipped to Vernon? I`m still waiting for a response from head office Rona stores Canada re: Sabal minor,Trachy`s,Needle palms for the Okanagan. Their main supplier is Costa nursery farms.http://www.costafarms.com/Public/PlantL ... x?Letter=Shttp://www.costafarms.com/Public/PlantL ... x?Letter=R

Debbie seemed interested that Needle Palms would grow here.

I looked up Rainbow-anything on the net, a couple of small nurseries?
Asked Deb for a business card; she didn't have one.

Maybe we should tell CostaFarms that Needle Palms should go into all Canadian HD stores...

Back to the palm...I'm absolutely blown away that they're Foxtails.
Can you tell the diff between a foxtail and fishtail?
If they were older it'd be easy, but I can't distinguish between them at this size.

Oh...Now that I have a 7 foot Wodyetia, I remembered I have ~25 of 'em in the basement sending out new leaves. :laughing6:

And our local letter carrier phoned to say a package of seeds has arrived, they've got it back at the post office "where it's warm".
Nice guy, huh?
Thanks for the Chamaerops seeds, today planted in a community pot.
Yippee, stuff to do so I can ignore the weather. :bigsmurf:

If you guys can convince all canadian hom edepot stores to carry needle palms, that would be awsome LOL. They dont even have anything really interesting at the one in my city.....

You can uaualy tell the difference between a foxtail and fishtail by the trunk. Caryota mitis has a white or grey trunk, especialy with age.... As far as I know foxtails have a more traditional trunk.. Id just looks up pics of both palms and check out the differences. And you know, retailers and other places can be notorious for misnaming palms and houseplants.

Guess I've gotta rename this topic (now that it's proven to be a FOXTAIL :bounce: versus a FISHTAIL :blackeye: ).
tell the difference between a foxtail and fishtail by the trunk
That only works on specimens that are old enough to show mature trunk color.

The ID/difference thingy drove me crazy so I researched it last nite until I got the hang of it.
Now I think I could tell the difference on every Foxtail/Fishtail once they're beyond strap leaves!!

Here's the answer, some of it from: An Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms (Riffle and Craft):

All forms of Caryota (Fishtail) are bi-pinnate leafed. Some say it resembles the greenery on a carrot, which isn't just leaves on a main stem, but leaves on little stems on more little stems attached to the main stem. The technical explanation is:The primary leaflets have been replaced by separate and smaller stalks that then bear leaflets (with or without individual stalks). But don't confuse the appearance with "alternating" leaflets, which simply means the leaflets are not attached to the rachis directly opposite one another, but in a more staggered manner.

Wodyetia (Foxtail) are pinnate leafed, which means more than 3 leaflets growing from a central axis (rachis), whether on opposite sides or on a flat plane. Wodyetia doesn't grow leaves on a flat plane, but are plumose (all the way around--in a boa-like appearance).

That encyclopedia is wonderful (I should read it more often).

Deb was right. I definitely bought 2 FOXTAIL--not FISHTAIL--palms at HD.

...and yes, I'm going to hound HD to bring Needle Palms into Canada.
We'll see if HD is more "approachable" than RONA.

Took a few months for the big Foxtail to put out a new frond.
(I really should change the topic from Fishtail).

Now I know why some people think the leaves look like they've been vandalized

I was thinkinking it looked like Foxtail when you first posted pic.

Barb I need your help!

I potted up my Foxtail seedlings and they are not growing and the green has faded to brown. They are in my house, temp is about 70F and out of direct sun. I just put plastic over the tops to help keep in the moisture.

Paul,
Yup, my huge species goof.

Got a pic of the brown problem?

Is brown at the bottom, or the growing point?
Is there good drainage in all that new soil?
Could it be fertilizer damage? I'd recommend not fertilizing until the second set of leaves emerge. Or very very dilute, if you do fertilize.
But I wouldn't fertilize a sick plant.

Sorry but I need to see it.

I would never spend $40 on a fishtail, actually I'd never actually buy a fishtail with any money... you'll have to package something else with it if you wanted to give me one for free

Quite similar when young.

FOXTAIL (not Fishtail) HAS A NEW LEAF

Post by lucky1 » Sat Aug 06, 2011 3:52 pm

This is getting to be quite lovely, despite the still-ragged ends.
Looking forward to leaves fully developed.

As with everything else around here, it's under a roof on the patio and gets only a few minutes of sun in late afternoon.
So far this leaf hasn't burnt.

Nice!
Looks a lot like my palm which I am unsure of. Maybe I'll photograph it for an I'd.
Mine, whatever it is, is potplanted in full sun and doing fine.

Always seems to depend on how they were grown in the nursery...in shade or sun.

You're buying all the sun-grown stuff, except maybe that big Sabal?
Mine must've been started in a cave, they can't handle sun.
Wish I had a larger patio roof.

Yup, a pic would be good...when your temp has dropped to 100F  so your camera doesn't melt.

that's a beauty. Fishtail type palms have always been my favorite. I remember growing a Caryota palms from RPS back in 2000 (germinated). These was suppose to be super hardy.......LOL......they died the first freeze up here in fall.

Aw, what a shame.
I suppose "super hardy" is a relative phrase if you're growing 'em in Southern Florida

BTW, mine turned out to be a Foxtail.

I am assuming this is Caryota but really don't know.
The frond in front is new this year and has some sun damage. This palm is in full sun, and it has been a little toasty lately.
The other two leaves are from last year and show damage from March, either late frosts or too much sun too fast.
