Shared delivery costs Montreal Palms to GTA

Post by mildan » Wed Mar 06, 2013 3:05 pm

Hello All, I got bit by the palm bug this winter and after searching for a source in the GTA (Toronto) area and coming up empty, I found Montreal Palms from an ad on this site. I spoke to Mike and his prices for palms were very reasonable, unfortunately the shipping from Montreal to the Toronto area brought up the prices significantly. Mike told me that he would split shipping costs on multiple orders, so I was wondering if anybody was interested? I don't care if they get delivered to your address or mine as long as your in driving distance of Vaughan or Brampton. Depending on what is ordered shipping could vary from $60 or less
The deadline for ordering is in the next few weeks for delivery in May.
Let me know.

Hi and welcome to Palmsnorth!
Which palms do you seek? There are many sources of cold hardy palms within an hour drive of Toronto. Some sources in the GTA.
Mike has some wonderful palms. True. But it may not be necessary to go that far especially once factoring (even shared) gasoline.

Welcome aboard, mildan!
got bit by the palm bug this winter
It's contagious and you'll have it for life.

FYI, Mike sent me a nice 3 gallon needle palm all the way to BC last year, that one palm's shipping cost was only about $48, not bad.

Look forward to seeing what you get.
And then we'll all help you increase your "wanted" list...

Thanks, I appreciate the welcomes!
I was looking at getting a couple of 15 gallon Trachy and perhaps some 1 or 5 gallon sizes of needle or sabals. The cost of shipping would be enough for at least another 15 gallon that's why I was looking to split shipping with 1 or more members. Seedscanada, besides Coles and Southcoast(which are relatively expensive) what other places can I find palms at prices comparable to Mike's within an hour's drive of the GTA?

I got a killer deal on a silver mediterannean fan palm in August at Sheridan Nurseries. There were bigger palms, but not what I was looking for at the time., here's the "heads-up" post:
http://palmsnorth.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... highlight=

Rice Road Greenhouses in Fonthill (a bit more than an hour away for you) has a killer selection of cold hardy palms. Some are very big. I was there a few weeks ago. They have needle, windmill, sabal, bismarck, Washingtonia robusta, CIDP all there now! And probably at a discount if bought in the next few weeks. You will have to ask to see their cold hardy palms, since they are kept cold, in a separate greenhouse. They will have newer arrivals in May. I really am considering going for a Yucca faxoniana from there... but you get the picture.

I was at Coles in Grimsby last Friday. They have all of their cold hardies on at HALF price, including the 3 ft clear trunk Trachycarpus fortuneis (30 gallon?) that were $499, now 250! Also 50 dollar trachies for 25 and some BLEs and only one (sad) needle now 90 bucks and monkey puzzles, etc, etc. Some are sad, and again you have to ask to see in their hoop house.

I should send your post, Adam, to our local nursery.
They recently converted half their GH into a clothing store

You guys back east are fortunate to have nursery owners who have some vision and imagination.

Can't wait to see what you get Mildan.
You'll probably understand that some of the huge palms--besides being expensive--are sometimes risky, especially when you're new to the hobby.
Often better to go with something half that size (but still sizeable); they settle in better, with fewer losses.

The Coles sale sounds interesting. Do you remember what size the $50 trachy were? Also were any of the BLE Magnolias? I'm looking to pickup a couple of BBB.

Mildan, they're ten inch pots (3 gallon?) with about 6 to seven inches of trunk. I bought two last year on the same promotion.
one has been planted out since spring.:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seedscanada/8499064412/" title="Trachycarpus fortunei Feb 2013 by seedscanada, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8099/8499 ... b313_z.jpg" width="640" height="359" alt="Trachycarpus fortunei Feb 2013"></a>

That would be 25 dollars now.

Thanks for the help Adam. I called Coles and the person I spoke to said the palms not available. :( , but he said that he was putting together his order for this year and would call me when the new stock came in. I would still go ahead with ordering from Montreal if anybody is interested.

Mildan,

I'm getting an order from Mike. I'm in Waterloo. If you want to tag your palm along I'm fine what ever the extra cost is plus a 6 pack of my favourite beer. I'm getting a couple Musa Basjoos and a large Windmill Palm (7-8ish feet). Let me know if your interested.

This offer is extended anyone within driving distance of Waterloo.

Tim

So, Mildan. I went to Coles last Friday. I got two windmill palms, 3 gallon size. Price was 50 dollars each. Got them for ten dollars each. They will need some love. Sometimes you just have to talk to the right person.

And they still had the 30 gallon trachycarpus fortunei there. They looked fine but may be back to full price by now

shared shipping of palms from montreal palms

Post by Arctic Palm » Mon May 26, 2014 6:47 pm

I'm looking to bring a couple large hard to Find palms in to SouthernOntario. Obviously shipping from Monteal is pricey for one or two items. Is anyone else looking to get palms or anything from Mike in Montreal? Let me know ASAP Thx
