Thanks Jim, the black Thai was in the ground but in an aweful spot and would not grow. So hopefully next year I find the perfect sitting for it.

Thanks Barb,
I have been hoping that keeping it inside would slow it down. Not sure I could handle a 15' bloom stalk right now. Fingers crossed that agave Mitis Nova goes into bloom this spring also. I would love a chance to cross the two.

A great selection of Agaves you have Chadec :D Am I seeing correct but is that $100 US for Agave Albopilosa?

Posted: Tue Jan 06, 2015 12:03 pm
by chadec
Thanks Andy and no you're not seeing wrong. That particular agave was much larger till it came inside and has since lost several leaves. I now have 7 albopilosas in my collection. Love those little guys. Now if I can just score a varigated ovatifolia, but everyone I bid on sells for over 450$ US.

You have lots of nice agave and yucca, there. I think I saw some manfreda, also. Those eucomis should be winter hardy for you. They have cool blooms that last a very long time.

Thanks,
This will be the first year for me actually testing eucomis, manfreda and crinum in the ground. I have always dug em up in years past. Hopefully they will be hardy, manfreda spot was blooming when the first frost killed it back.

Awesome collection!

I have seen a bunch of those Medio Picta Alba across the street :D

I got a bunch of pups off one plant-one was even all green.

Jim,
I really love those media picta alba. They most certainly revert back to their non variegated form. If your lucky you can catch a plant with a full albino pup. You just won't be able to separate it. Made that mistake on a larger yellow agave. :(

So far this winter we have had lows down to 2F. Looks like my loses so far are aloe aristata, agave utahensis and chrysantha. Once again havardiana and ovatifolia are unfased without any protection.

You won't have a problem with eucomis or hardy crinums. That spotted manfreda will surprise me if it makes it, though. Manfreda virginica should do well in your zone but isn't as showy. Tell me about agave Havardiana and ovatifolia. You say they'll live through zone 7 temps with precip? That's pretty awesome. I've got some havard pups I'm growing out to try in the ground. How long have you had both agave in ground? What low temps have they seen? How do they look after winter?

Thanks!

I have had the ovatifolia in ground for 4 years and the havardiana in ground for 6. Last year we seen our lowest temps of -1F. In 2010 the havardiana went through a awful winter being frozen for a month. Neither agave has shown any winter damage. Lost a larger ovatifolia last year but I believe the soil amendment was poorly done on my part. I have started using 75% non organic material like pea gravel and course sand. So far this year lechuguilla has been unfased. It has pups growing out of the protection and they are all perfect. Not bad for a first yr. Agave.

Snow and ice, going down to 0 deg F. Very uncommon winters for my area to have temps this low.

It only snowed 4" deep but agave havardiana is feeling the burn.

Chad. Great pics. Your pics reminded me I have to get some more Agaves for my collection. What is the cold hardiest Agave? Our snow and cold has disappeared for weeks now. We now know where it went to.

I would do the same thing. I don't think the cold will hurt it, not in your zone. It would the wet or rot that would do it in. I had one more, but i watered it in before I covered it up for the winter, I should have planted it dry and let it alone, it was mush by spring. I very weary of trying one again but I did and have had it for years. :D

John, for me in order I would say havardiana, ovatifolia and parryi var. parryi. But ovatifolia gets big and must be planted on a slant or it holds too much moisture. Trying lechuguilla and appears to be promising as pups are surviving outside with no protection. Going down into negective degrees F tonight and still have plenty of ice on the ground so it will be interesting to see.

Chad.... even though I'm zone 8a I don't get off that lightly. Despite a -7C min I've lost one of my oldest Agaves which I had for 5 years in the ground.. Agave Montana and even managed leaf burn on Agave havardiana.

Admittedly mild leaf burn but both Agaves were unprotected.

Andy, I always keep in mind how mesic an agave is when deciding to test its hardiness. I know Greg list montana as one of the most hardiest and mesic agaves. So far I am impressed with mine, however it is planted in 75% non organic such as pea gravel and DG. I noticed yours appears to be in complete top soil. Definitely amend the soil and plant on an angle. You may want to try agave montana baccarat. I had this agave in ground for 4 yrs. lost it last winter at -18C. I can't say how many hardy agaves I have killed. Doesn't look like my ocahui or parryi v truncata is gonna make it. I have 4 ovatifolias, 4 havardianas, 4 parryi parryi, lechuguilla, toumeyana ssp bella surviving unprotected. Some that I can't leave unprotected are salmiana, durangensis, victoria reginae, gentry, bracteosa, and insects finished off my protoamericana silver surfer. But I always buy in pairs and never give up.
