These have been blooming for around a week.

This Claret cup is going to bloom this year- for the first time in a few years....

I think it was 42F last night...this spring has been strange...
lots of cold intrusions and below normal temps.

I may try and get some Castor bean plants in the ground today-
they will enjoy the forecast 80s to low 90s. :D

Going to be at least 3 new kinds of cactus flowers,some I have only seen bloom once before.....
one is Salmon colored and one blood red-don't even know what the other looks like.....


Should be the best cactus flower display so far!

Looking forward to seeing the Claret cup flower,I think it only bloomed once...maybe the first year.

The cactus really balloon up this time of year,pretty great combo of heat and moisture here.


I just did plant my Castor beans the other day....planting instructions for Castor beans....

dig hole,place plant in hole...water-STAND BACK.

Which bamboo was shooting? They looked a bit rough earlier in the year, did all the culms on them re leaf?

Jim, finally you posted the succulent "yard" pics! Thanks! Everything looks perfect! Mafreda plant, is it the maculosa? And the purplish plant, is it either phormium or cordiline?

Jesse, the sexy agave is A.parry I assume. And the left one is A.havardiana.

Igor has it right-I didn't picture the A.Americana because it is ratty.

The one pictured is P.Bisetti,the Black bamboo is sending up
new shoots too,it is regrowing some of the previous years shoots.

I will get a pic of the Sequoia...I had been wondering if the burnt orange
discoloring of winter would go,or regrow....the answer soon........here is a shot
of it coming out of winter.

I ALWAYS do that with that damn agave!

Jim - I think for the most part lots of evergreen conifers will wind burn in a winter where they are borderline hardy. Your winter wasnt as nice as last. Im sure most of not all will recover in time.

Great to hear about the boos and cant wait to see then in a few weeks!

I was wondering whether the Sequoia would grow back some green
or whether it would change back to green...winter discoloration is
normal here and I thought the native cedar looked worse than the Sequoia.

Hey Jim did I ever tell you that your Trichocereus is a beauty? Your Sequoiadendron is getting so huge!

No Tim :wink: I hope it really blast a good amount of growth,
I was poking at it the other day and it is very solidly rooted so,
we'll see...the Cereus Peruvianus looks about ready to pop on top and June
is about right for that!

Basically no damage except a few little branches.

They guy who sells them said they just need to get some size to have enough sap to deal with the cold.

This one saw -18F under a rose cone and was untouched so they can handle cold.

Your place is a good example of where they can try them for carbon sinks. Theyve cloned some of the oldest and biggest ones for that very reason

My cactus are just thinking of blooming, I belive you are 2 weeks ahead. We are colder than normal, except the 2 days in the 90's. :D

The house is for sale,hopefully if there is a new owner
they will continue to rent the 3 apt spaces....that is also why
I have not gone to wild with planting anything right now...
