Yucca baccata

Post by Jay-Admin » Thu Nov 11, 2004 7:57 pm

Has anyone grown Yucca baccata from seed? If so what are your experiences. Do they grow slow and how hardy are they?

Regards,
Jay

I have not grown this one from seed because they sucker so fast, but they should start very easy if they are like most yucca seeds. Plant under 1/8 - 1/4 inch of dirt and keep soil moist almost wet at room temp. and they should come up in ten days or so.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Sorry I did not answer all of the Q. They have been very hardy here in Idaho, and seem to grow moderate - fast, but slow to form a trunk. If they die wait for suckers, they will do even better! Most yuccas don't seem to do much in thier first five years of growth, but after that they pic up much speed and sould start growing a small trunk ( if a trunking sp.).

Hi Jay!
Did you grow your seedlings on your own? Did the seed sprout ok?

Yucca

Post by Wes North Van » Fri Mar 31, 2006 10:40 pm

How big will the trunk get on this species?
The flowers have short stalks on them compared to filamentosa.
Nice Yucca though.

Not the greatest pic. Got a little beat up over the winter.
I'll post some end of summer yucca and cacti pics later this week. :D

Nice Jay, look at the trunk on that thing!!! :D :D
Outstanding!

My Yucca filamentosa took a worse beating this winter than your recurve.

It'll be nice to see your other pics.

Thanks Barb, I have never protected this one yet and has survived three winters now.
I think I might start this year, I wouldn't want to lose it now that it has a trunk.

If i'm not too lazy i'll get some more pics posted this week. :D

Bet that fence provides a nice microclimate, especially in winter.
Do you heap tons of snow on top of it, too?

Mine are out in the open, and the cold northwest winds did their damage last winter.
Too far from the house for me to take care of reliably.

Yeah, The fence helps it form the winds. I do put some more snow over it for insulation.
Seems to do it good.

Thanks for posting so nice fotos! From a numerous yucca seedlings the baccata ones are which I like most of all. Even two different varieties one from Arizona nd another one from New-Mexico varies very much. They have different color of the leaves edge.
