Finaly got to see the sun, and some things are showing signs of cold burn.
The rabbits may have done more damage then the cold. :x

Hybrid agave, covered by a towel. No signs of burn yet.

Now that the weather is warming I'm starting to see signs of burn on my dwarf j-tree. Wich is strange becuase it almost never gets burned, even the older leaves are showing burn. Just have to wait until spring gets here to see what happens. :|

Wow, Aaron the rabbits have almost totally destroyed the recurvi...

Are coyotes simply forcing rabbits closer to residences?
Or are there a heck of a lot more rabbits now, i.e. fewer coyotes? :?

You had no severe J-tree damage last year so why this year? Oh man!

I think it's time for blankets and cardboard boxes over your stuff, Aaron.
Too valuable to lose to either cold or rabbits.

There has always been lots of rabbits, but after the fire a few years back there is still nothing for them to eat in the winter and even in the summer. They can kill some things, but most things come back. I ran out of things to cover plants from rabbits.

That cold weather when plants were still growing is what did it. Just to much to go from 50F/10C to -13F/-25C in a weeks time. :x

I don't wont to cover things that have not been covered from the beginning. I dont wont them to warm up to much and get cold again. Also I think it is good to leave them out in the dry air so they dont get fungus. Dont want any dead tissue rotting. But if it gets -0f again I will try and cover them up for a night or so.

But now that leaves have been chewed, those open cuts don't have their normal "waxy" covering.
Good if you can give them some help.

10C to -25C in one week.
That's brutal indeed.

Maybe next summer somebody will scatter wheat seed in the valley...

Thanks for the pics Aaron! Always love to see your plants. Too bad about the weather/pests. I'm sure your summer heat will bring everything back to where it was in no time!

I'm sure your J-Tree will pull through, like you said.

That is a good point, and I will watch them for a while and see how they do. It has been warm here over 0C day and night for more than a week. That is why signs of damage are showing up. But even with the bad burn on the dwarf j-tree I think it will still push out leaves if it don't heal its self all together.
The last extreme cold spell I did try to cover some things but the wind here blew things off or was like a sail and moved the plant around to much for good. Because my job calls me away on cold weather and snow I was unable to fix the problem. I hope for better luck next time.

PS When my plants do seed, there will be very hardy plants to share with us on the forum. I like to weed out the weak and find the truly hardy plants. And this will be a good test for the larger plants that I have, and I belive they will live.

I am starting to notice a trend with my yuccas. The ones kept out of the heavy snow (drier but out in the very cold) look much better than the ones that were under snow cover

Aaron, I wonder if there's a way of "sealing" those chewed ends on a warm day.
I suppose hot candle wax wouldn't be a good idea

And...don't forget my big yucca rostrata died last winter outdoors with no heat...so better follow your own gut-feeling. :|

that's strange how your Yuccas in snow look so bad compared to the ones not in snow. Yucca gloriosa seems to get white leaves when in contact with snow but the other species don't seem that bad. Keep us posted.

Here's my rabbit damage I found a few weeks ago.

Your right Barb, but I don't think any yuccas here need heat in the winter. Of cource a little cover goes a long way. This is the first year my larger rostratas look better than my larger j-trees, so no need to cover the rostratas yet. :D

It is strange and I cant say that it is good science, but I have lost one large j-tree after it was buried in a snow drift and a few small ones. But than again yucca recurvifolia and filimantosa don't seem to mind the snow at all? :|

My overall feeling is that desert yuccas perform better if high and dry. :)

If I hadn't seen it in your pic, Aaron, I wouldn't have believed that "nice" yuccas (as I call them...versus my y.filamentosa  ) would suffer under snow.
And to lose a large Joshua in a snowdrift!!!

Cold was always the limiting factor.
We always asked "what's your min temp?"
And if someone said "-30C" for at least two weeks every winter, we said "oops, y.rostrata will not make it...unless it's covered in five feet of snow".

The book needs a rewrite. Let us know how they progress, Aaron.

Aaron and Tim each need a big dog sitting out there waiting for the wabbits at night.

Or an audio recording of a coyote howling (quietly?).
Or sprinkle the ground with mountain lion pee...available at your local camping store :sign7:

Great photos, everyone. Makes me wonder if I shouldn't put more effort into them vs. palms. :?
As for rabbits, my three dogs keep them away very effectively. The cats (5? number varies) probably help too.
Goats have been my plague (nine in the freezer now!) but they left my few yuccas alone, as tasty needle palms were available.

Now that I have got my dwarf j-tree mostly covered, it has warmed up and is showing even more damage. Very early for this kind of damage. This was a very hardy plant and I would say even more hardy than my big j-tree. I have only seen it get very small burn in the past.
I am also thinking the damage could have also came from the protected location of this plant. It was probably still growing good when the time of the cold hit and had no time for slowing down for winter. J-trees and banana yuccas are easy to see the leaves dehydrate/shrivel up for winter protection, as this was not the case.
I still think it will be ok, but will keep a report going. :)

Well since it was warm today I checked on everything and all look good for the most part except for a couple dwarf j-trees and some cactus.

I just can't get over how bad my one normaly very hardy j-tree got burned? I think I have only ever seen it one other year with a few burn spots and that was when it was small? I planted grass by it and so it got more water than normaly in fall, that was probably some to do with it. I'm not sure if it will make it.

Just a bad year for that yucca and the other one near it. Probably the most protected place in my yard and could of been it's down fall. Even if it does not make it, it will come back from the roots. :D

Aaron,

Hope the little J-Tree pulls through! It's such a cool plant. You're probably right about the sudden shift in temps. having an unusually adverse effect on the plant. It looks bad, but not that bad? Neat to see y. rostrata handling -25c so well. Thanks for the pics!

Here's an update on the j-trees and some other stuff.
Not first time I have lost plants and not the last. :)

I think I have lost the last of my white-sands echinocereus trigs. I had the big plant for awhile now. (dead) :(
Big one

and my other last one (maybe dead)

Very hardy basilaris, first time I have seen it burn.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

And the hardiest agave I have ever had. A. neomexicana x utahensis

Yea, it only looks good in the pic. As soon as the weather warms it will be mush.

Its ok, I'm on a qwest to find plants that live long term in zone 5 so people can have good cold hardy plants.

I have a started a trend. Most of my less hardy plants are for AZ. :D

In the bottom pic, the small pup on the right might be ok. But the top pic they look worse in person. :)

Thanks Tim. :D The agave cross I got from Plantasia Cactus Gardens. I pulled it out of a flat of A. utahensis he had. I was looking for a A. neomexicana but he had none except one different one in the flat his dealer said must of been a A. neomexicana. It looked so different than the others so I took a chance and bought it. I also bought some of the utahensis but none of them are still alive.

Oh boy! Unbelievable Y. filamentosa looks so awful! What was the minimum t there? Recurvifolia is too bad as well. Mine was touched by the hard prolonged frost last winter but rot at the middle of the stem after late April frost... Friend of mine has Echinocereus for many years growing outside. What is a Hell a difference between your zone 5 and my so called zone 6!
