Giving up on B. eriospatha x S. glaucescens

Post by lucky1 » Sat Jan 19, 2013 10:35 am

Germination attempted last winter = no go.
Sanded/de-lidded attempted March of 2012 = no go.
Left them in takeout container all summer warm spot, no full sun = no go.
Resoaked last month, and they all sank :D
De-lidded/sanded/poked and prodded yesterday.

The only thing left was to check with a hammer

Only one seed was white inside (the one I "checked" with the hammer :| ), the rest were dead brown pulp.

Anybody had success with these?

Into the compost they go.

do you think the seeds were old when you received them?

Maybe when you de lidded them, the soil was too moist, and they rotted from the inside?

I have grown butia capitata successfully from seed. It took a while.
My method is this... Soak for 24 -36hours. Plant with the seed node down.
Label the pot with the species and date.
completely bury the seeds.

Plant something else in that pot. Something that will grow right away. Love it water it and sun it.

And magically between six and twelve months later*if you're lucky* you will see something else growing in the pot. What's that?
*read sideof the pot* wow! Look. It is the Butia!!

Got a couple of 'em that way now

Yeah, Jesse and Tim, those are all possibilities.

Adam, glad yours worked...and I like your technique.
Since all (usually intact) "old" seed goes back into the soil/compost bags, I usually end up doing exactly that.
But without the label...

Any pics of your F1's?
