palm seed germination

Post by hasty22 » Sun Dec 30, 2012 12:55 pm

Hi Barb . looks like a good selection of palms. I to am doing the same thing today as well. I also got my seeds from the same place. Been soaking them since friday night and was going to put them in containers this afternoon. I was going to try 2 methods ziploc container with starting mix and extra perlite. the second method i was going to try was ziploc containers with damp paper towel. I was using the ziploc containers instead of bags because they stack nicer and was going to put them above fridge in cupboard that is about 25 c. I got 9 different palm varieties and one cycad. was going to do half of each using both methods. thanks
Keith

Wonderful!
I like the stackable containers too.
Never had a lick of luck with baggies that I recall.
I've never tried the paper towel method, let us know what happens.

How positive of us to post under Germination freshly-arrived seeds    HINT HINT!!!!!

The HUGE germination post (Part II) that Cameron started is the place to show what/how varieties are doing once something happens:
http://palmsnorth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4470

Great ideas in there as to what to do depending on variety.

The 16 pages of Part I is here: http://palmsnorth.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... &start=600

Barb, Ive been waiting a month for mine, must be the "good" timing for ordering (christmas) :P

Those baucarnea seeds germinate fast. The seedlings take YEARS to get any good size. Mine had a toonie sized foot, untill I lost them outside. No chance theyd survive the winter :(

Yeah, it's silly that I ordered from Germany in November.
Always gets caught in the December mail bottleneck.

ARE YOU READY FOR THIS??????
2 hours in water:
Cyrtostachys renda:

I'll post in GERMINATION PART II, if I find out it's not a worm

You'll recall I was fooled before (with the Jubaea "worm").

Wow, great post, Barb! You should find that the Cycads will also germinate rather quickly for you :)

So, nobody thinks it's a worm like last time?...
I was afraid to touch it in case it was. EEEEUUUUUUWWWW!

Thanks.
I've had some luck germinating Cycas debaoensis, but other Cycads have eluded me.
At this point they're all still rattling.
