These Aloes were outside much longer (like 3 more weeks) and experienced colder temps and are actually frozen solid when I dug them up........no damage at all.

<img src=http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/ ... 8AE76D.jpg>

I also messed with Aloe striatula when I lived in Rhode Island back in 1999-2003 and it was rather hardy too.....it would die back to the ground but would resprout in spring. It wasn't as attractive as the variegated Aloe I have now.

Cameron......The Aloe reitzii did not receive any damage where the A. ecklonis received moderate damage.....the ecklonis was a year older too. Perhaps the A. reitzii will prove hardier than Aloe variegata when mature??

Tim, I had some seedling A. reitzii outdoors to temps of -6 C. They were kept completely dry, and most were undamaged.

Sabal x brazoriensis. This species is hardier than many people believe. Some people have compared its hardiness to that of S. "Birmingham"! :

Tim, none of these Citrus are fully hardy in our zone, or even zone 7a for that matter. They can be grown with protection though, along with a couple of other varieties that I haven't taken pics of. With that being said, the C. taiwanica and Changshou Kumquats survived -6 C potted and unprotected this year. There are other (essentially) fully hardy varieties for us, but they are not available in seed form. I'll be ordering some in the spring though!

Nice update, Cameron, especially the Nannorrhops.
The Nannorrhops you started last winter must be bursting out of their seedling pots if the one pictured is this winter's batch.

And those Phoenix come up like gangbusters!
The roots are soooooo long in just one growing season...here's my "delicate" attempt to separate them:

Barb, this Nannorrhops is actually from last winter. It's potted in a gigantic 2 kg vitamin container

I'm not looking forward to separating the Phoenix roots either!

Ah, that Nannorrhops is from last winter...let me know if the vitamin container helps

And Phoenix roots are VERY VERY fleshy, the slightest mishandling (or heavy lump of soil) and it just snaps off.
But Phoenix aren't affected by rough root treatment.
Not like brahea

Cameron., nice seedlings!

Glad to see some of those musa seeds sprouted. They needs as much sun as you can possibly give them, right in a south window. Helens hybrid is apparently edible, and hardy to zone 7 (again, apparently), which if true would make it the hardiest edible banana. For that statement to be true, you would have to get it to fruit in zone 7 i guess :P

Thanks, Jesse! I have been researching Helen's Hybrid lately too, and I was really surprised by how hardy they're claimed to be! I had three seedlings sprout, but they were exposed to -6 C, and this is the only survivor

Hi Jesse,

I purchased these seeds........

Pseudopanax crassifolius
Richea dracophylla
Richea pandanifolia
Schefflera rhododendrifolia (= S. impressa)
Vernonia volkameriaefolia

I really only wanted the Schefflera rhododendrifolia but needed to get the order up to 30 EUROs.

photos off the web:

Cameron

Those numbers are off the web-I have seen regular old Aloe Vera take temps well below freezing.

Maybe you were referring to Aloe polyphylla (Spiral aloe) -this one is super hardy!

And absolutely beautiful-but rare.

some day I'll test those Schefflera outside...........they are suppose to be one of the hardiest......perhaps a zone 7b plant?

Despite Dylan's (Jubaea) advice last year to wait for a first or second leaf to put them into the 14-inch pots...I will risk some of them rotting.
Just can't see having to do this twice within a year.
But it is definitely harder to get seeds warm when it's sitting up 14" above a warm concrete floor.

Ta da....drumroll.
All the seeds are now on soil.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/8389535729/" title="001 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8094/8389 ... 849b_c.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="001"></a>

Believe it or not...I ran out of 14" Stuewe pots :|
Then I remembered I used a bunch last Fall to pot up 2012 seedlings.
Used up all 100 14-inch pots!

It's wonderful to have an unfinished basement (concrete floor) to muck around in during the winter.
And there was lots of muck!
Went through one and a half BALES of potting soil too! Whew.

OK, now G R O W !!!!!

Whew...could've been MY place

Maybe the Yuzu could use the heat from a germinating mat?
I'm using one under the Copernicia hospita palm seeds, but wish I could ramp the temp up...feels too cool for palm seeds.

Wow, that's a lot of work, Barb! Keep us posted on the progress

Tim, from my experience, Citrus seeds don't need too much heat to germinate. The problem seems to be viability and/or mold on the seeds.

Tim, you should contact Ned in SC on the HPS board for some Yuzu seeds. He shipped some to me, and even with the customs delays there was still a great germination ratio!

Tim, I've also been doing some more research on A. ecklonis recently. It seems as if some of the hardier grass Aloes actually die back during the winter, and regrow during the spring. So maybe the foliage damage is just superficial!

Hi Cameron,

OK......nice research.........perhaps A. ecklonis is a 'perennial'........I grew A. striatula and it regrew from the roots and was rather fast growing..........ecklonis has better looking foliage than striatula.

Good job barb!

Scrolling down really fast, I noticed a post I never realized before. I couldnt figure out why anyone would post cases of beer, then I realized it was barbs post, with cups ontop of the pots ....
