What seeds are you starting this winter?

Post by lucky1 » Mon Nov 07, 2011 9:53 pm

I wasn't going to do ANY this winter...BUT:

Seeded a small flat of Dasylirion wheeleri (Sotol).

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jstephenconn/3042665532/

I ought to be about 147 years old when they resemble the photo. :clown:

So what's everyone else starting?
(I imagine Cameron is done...)

Great choice, Barb!

Last winter I started the seeds that I had large quantities of. This winter, I've got around 100 species of seed, but in smaller quantities!!

Mostly I am focusing on cuttings this year... But, I am sowing some hybrid Yuccas, some magnolia hybrids, and probably more Rhodo hybrids. I'd also like to track down some Pieris floribunda seeds if possible!

Nothing tropical for me this year... Not enough time to get back and make it look pretty!

This winter I continue to fight with my bad luck with seeds ;)
I started in the early December with:
Xanthorrhea australis 5 seeds
Catalpa bignonioides 20 seeds
Miscanthus Gigantheus 50 seeds
Dasylirion wheeleri 5 seeds
Dickinsonia Antarctica 2 seeds
Licuala Grandis 2 seeds

So far - I see something's going on with Catalpa seed :)

I hope I got in the next few days some new seeds of different plants. I will let you know of course :)
Keep exoting!

Very cool trees. Do they grow wild in your area Barb?? We have a similar looking tree here that grows really fast but it is this kind. Similar leaves though. There is another that also gives the large beanpods but I'm not sure what that is???????

PS I have plenty of mimosa tree seeds if anyone wants any. Just send me a message......

Hey, I know Paulownia. Some of my friends in Poland have them in the ground. Paulownia produces really big leaves and can grow up to 2-3 and even higher meters in warm season in Poland. When winter comes it has to cut Paulownia with the ground level and again it startsto grow next spring.
I'm going to have Paulownia plant next season from my friend.

Some pics of his Paulownia and his daughter

Everyone's starting some really interesting stuff.
Look forward to seeing the progress.

Godfryd, I'm especially interested in the 2 Licuala Grandis you're germinating.

I had a small one but it died, I think from lack of humidity.

Would you like one to add to your collection
Thanks, Jesse!
If you get one to trunk, I'll be first in line

I'm a sucker for trunking palms.
You know...the ones that basically won't grow here (whereas a needle just might!)

Erik...I know you love Sabals...but just think of all those Christmas Palm seeds lying around your feet at the beach!

They might take a while to trunk :P IF i get a few to sprout dont be surprised if one shows up at your doorstep :D I got a good feeling about the needle palm there, especially against that wall

And you like "trunking" palms eh? Sounds like a Freudian slip to me barb :D Needle palm is my only chance to grow a palm here "long term". Couple that with some climate change, I should be successful :D

Funny!

If only climate change would bring us all warmer winters...not asking for much (just a climate like southern England would be nice).

Im getting shorter warmer winters, plus longer spring and fall, and cooler summers.

Better then the maritimes - longer winters and cooling temps (sry cameron)

I bet you had 100% germination on the Dasylirion wheeleri.
Surprising how many popped here.
How long until these delicate-looking plants can be handled for potting individually do you think?

I they are anything like agave seedlings, id ait till they have a few true leaves. Again, if they are similar to agave, their roots are quite long. I have 2 agave parryi babies that are in tiny yogurt cups, that are still growing quite well though.

Then again, the general rule is, dont move seedlings till they have at least one true leaf, 2 or 3 is better...

The few I planted popped very well. :D

When they are small, I have no problem handling them individually. I think it is a good time to move them. Yuccas also, I think they move very well when very small. Just water them in well. :D Cactus, I do the same with, small roots are easy to move.

Holy crap can you say yucca/agave season? LOL It looks like most of us are starting soem sort of them!

Barb - Sorry, I thought i had replied! The agave seem to be doing well, and still growing in a southern window all winter (slowly of course:P ). They no look like tiny little representations of their adult glory. They're going to be repotted in the next few weeks. If you use normal potting soil (like i did) keep them in shallower pots, and keep them dry.

adam - Those washy seeds are the easiest palm seeds ive germinated. No extra heat, nothing special cept room temps, and 50% germination after a month. I couldnt believe it.

I hope you have some luck with those paw paw seeds. ITs good to see people trying to bring it back down in southern ontario (part of its native range). Do not let the seeds dry out in any way shape or form, and dont forget to stratify them for a minimum of 60 days..

Naini Tal were easy to pop as well, just took a bit longer for me.

Godfryd- Musella are the only banana seeds i have no problems with. Ive rotted/failed to germinate about 10 kinds of musa/musella/ensete seeds over the years. The only other one that ive had success with is Musa Itinterans (burmese blue). I planted 5 seeds and got 2 strong, healthy plants. I managed to sprout a Musa sp (helens hybrid), but left it in the sun, dried it out and killed it :(.

Igor - Holy crap its a competition now eh :D

I sprouted agave utahensis. Soaked them in lukewarm water for a day, sowed them ion the surface, and gave em bright light for 16 hours a day. They only took 4 or 5 days!!

Ive had horrible luck with yucca. 0 luck out of 5 batches of seed. I hope you have better luck then me

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Igor will need a wide angle lens to show us those...wow.

Everybody's list has some really really interesting plants.
Can't wait to see them pop.

Remember the #1 tenet of seed growing:
don't let your kids near seedling flats...they rearrange labels :x

Happy Growing in the New Year everybody!

May your seeds be plump,
Watching them, sitting on your rump.
