73F yesterday-I noticed the palms (which had been locked
down growthwise in frozen soil)have now grown an avg of one
quarter inch in one day.

Soil temp this morning @ 4" was 43F and was up to 47F
last evening- 50F usually gets the palms going when the soil
has been so cold for 4+ months.

Its been spring like since our climb out of winter March 6th
from 10F(winter morning) to 48F+ Springlike 51F in my garden
where temps can run 3-5F milder.

:-)

Warm down here in OK, too. Most potted palms are out, and starting to grow.

Out in Oregon, never had a freeze all winter!

Really looks like we are going to have a good spring. Palms should see alot of growth this year.

You back in Ok Erik?

Yea...nice spring here too so far, really normal to
above normal and dry with lots of sun for the palms
but I did have to do a little watering.

I also sawed down on a few palms and was surprised
to see they were goners, usually I will lift covers and
let the palms dry out/get some air but an unexpected
emergency and not covering some palms until it was
actually snowing obviously caused a few problems.

Oh no Jim...sad to lose some after so many years.

Which palms did you lose?

Thanks Phil

Really just one of the Tesan and the Armata,
just to much moisture,cold,warmth,that is
really a situation that only the fungus can take advantage of..

I left both Needle palms uncovered and some of the S.Louisiana
and the McCurtain was covered but no heat-I think all the Sabal
will return believe it or not but the Needles are cored out, although
there may have been one or two side shoots that were small enough
and covered enough to come back.

I will wait to say anything more about the Sabal/Needle palms
that were uncovered but if they come back, hearing what temps
they endured is really quite amazing.

btw

I left a Trachy and my Butia uncovered too, they were both
leaning like Barb's Trachy but had lost their spears + 5 months ago.

Jim, yes, was back in OK all winter, caring for W with health problems. Will get back to palms in OR in April, May in Costa Rica, Belize in June. Then, back in OR for a bit!

Keep us updated on your plants.
