End of season garden update from Cheshire, England.

Post by cheshirepalms » Wed Sep 03, 2014 10:57 am

Well as we head into September and Autumn its time for an end of season video, which will be the last for this year. Everything was great until mid August, then came the cold, wind, rain and subsequent trashing of the garden. Hope you enjoy the videos, although it could have been better. The Joys of trying to grow exotics in northwest England. Here's to a warm Autumn and mild winter!!!

I thought I'd do a pictorial update of my garden in spring. Everything has come through the winter nicely and even a few surprises along the way. My Musella Lasiocarpa is in flower and my seed grown avocado has made it through the winter!

Garden looks great, love the lotus flower. Maybe one day my musella will. Did your aloes survive in the ground or did you dig em?

Thanks a lot, the Lasiocarpa started to flower in February and looked scruffy and frost affected but looks better day on day. It should last all summer and get bigger. The Aloe Striatula and Agave Americana were left in the ground unprotected and were both fine (third winter for the Americana) My Aloe Maculata, was mushed but looks like it may come back from the base. One planted in a Belfast sink in pure grit is fine, so drainage is hugely important with my wet winters. The jury's out on Aloe Aristata, as its just been planted.

Only ever tried aloe aristata with protection and still turned to mush. They do fine down the road at Plant Delieghts, but I believe my altitude is too high.

Update August 2016

Post by cheshirepalms » Sat Aug 06, 2016 8:52 am

Its been a while but here's an update. Its not been a great summer, but its certainly not been horrendous and certainly nothing unusual. Just normal summer conditions we'd expect in the UK, some cool periods, some wet and some warm or even hot days on a few occasions. Far too much whingeing about the weather, it is what it is. We'd don't live in the Med so where the expectations for endless days of hot sunshine come from I'm not sure. Anyway rant over, today has been warm and sunny so I've done a video update for the garden. The palms are certainly growing quicker than any year so far as is the Musa Basjoo. I've not had the time I've had in previous years and it is a little rough round the edges. Hope you enjoy the videos and that your gardens are flourishing!
