Canary Island Date Palm in zones 5-7?

Post by sashaeffer » Thu Aug 07, 2014 4:28 am

Anyone have any luck....and their success story in getting these to survive winters in those zones?

Picked up 3 (two smaller ones) on a road trip to California this spring. Going to just keep them in pots in garage this winter, but would sure like to plant one of the smaller ones in the spring if there is any chance of success....based on others.

I don't think they like cold roots.

Only chance for survival CIDP in zones 5-7 if you heating them. Passive protection don't work. Here's two links from other forum where you can see big CIDP in Budapest botanical garden (zone 7) and winter protection for that palm.

One member of Croatian palm forum from Donji Miholjac (eastern Croatia) in zone 7 also have big exemplar in his garden

Greatest problem for him is tie leaves up before winter. This is not a easy task for one man.
