The things we do............

Post by sashaeffer » Sun Mar 02, 2014 11:30 am

I don't have to water all my indoor/over wintering palms at the same time(over 130) I have to use well water from the spigot outside...even a day like today when it's only 0F outside. 10 milk jugs filled twice. Use a short garden hose attached to a filter(to keep iron out) then...warm water I use in the micro wave so I'm not using cold water.

Wife just shakes her head.......

It's been a brutal winter this year what does everybody else do that goes beyond the norm to keep their palms happy and healthy?

Luckily my agaves and cacti ( around 500 ) usually dont require but one or two waterings. I have very few palms, bananas, EE's or other tropical plants that require winter water. After I replace all the dead plants in my garden this year next winter my building should be half empty.

Yes, the winter losses could be huge this year for a lot of us.

Scott, that's quite the job.
Using 5 gallon buckets, letting them sit in a warm room for 4 or 5 days will achieve room temp.
And save $$$$ not running the M/W.

Here, I'm even losing some of last winter's seedlings...in the house! :x
Afraid to even go look at the barely-heated building where most of the plants are. :|

I just water the plants in my greenhouse with cold tap water. I haven't seen any ill effects yet this year. Don't have the patience to warm the water up before using lol.

I even use softened water. I'm most things look fine. But I'm unsure if maybe my Washy and Pygmy Date hate soft water or if its a case of over/under watering. Only about 6 weeks until they are outside and hopefully thriving...

I agree......watering plants this time of year is aweful. My garden is probably 38F and plants still dry out every 3 weeks....we need some heat to get them outside again.

Isn't there a lot of salt residue in softened water?

Supposedly...yet I have one spigot in garage that is softened water that I use for one of my ponds to fill it and it's not affected the fish or plant life at all.

I'd recommend teebee not use softened water for Washy and Pygmy Date, and see if they improve.

Recall reading somewhere that old folks shouldn't drink softened water because all that salt adversely affects their liver or kidneys.
So maybe teebee's palms would improve with the switch?

Worth a try.
