Thai giant has a couple good sized leaves,one is over 3' and the other is close,it is flowering now-we'll see how big the next leaf is.

Castor always look awkward at this stage...the leaves are almost as big as the plant is tall-
one of the leaves is up to 30" already.

They are great flowers -the changing color is like having more flowers on one plant.

The giants really love the warm humid nights-plenty of time left for them to grow too.

I have thought about putting a little poly tunnel over it to speed it up,I could keep the nights around 90F!

These things will grow fast like a banana plant with enough heat.

the castors are almost 6ft IDK how big the leaves are havn't got a tape out there and checked. The Thai is very strange short fat stems the plant is maybe 4 ft tall if that but the leaves are 3ft+ there actually laying on the ground bc the stems are not long enough to keep them up.

What about the manfreda? I really want to try some of those next year.

One thing I am doing this year is giving my Thai giant lots more water,
it probably would like even more-but I think it really is best from the skies
as I can not get the coverage mother nature can so easily.

The Grapto has grown like a weed in the cactus garden which is obviously covered over winter.

I tried some Grapto and Ice plant outside of protection this winter(I did have a rain cover 4 the Grapto)
the Ice plant came back strong and even 2 pieces of the Grapto survived -4F!

Im with you I will take a good downpour over the hose any time. I usually try to wait till its going to rain really good before putting on fertilizer also..I feel like the rain takes it deeper into the soil and they get more benefit.. I do try to water it daily if there is no rain in the forcast.

That Takil one way or another is also from James seeds.

Mike I do the same thing in regard to fertilizer.

I have had to help out though as July has gone dry for the most part...
the heat and humidity are back for the Mon-Fri period.

(not in regard to cold hardiness)when it gets bigger.
They are much more exotic looking than the other Trachys.

It has dried up here as well 91 all week with no sign of rain in the forcast. Just a little update for our big leaf competition

largest castor is 5'4 with a leaf of 25"...thai giant has a leaf of 37" and a new one comming out of that

My Castor are probably approaching 50" or so....

The biggest leaf is about 29"

The Thai giant has a couple 3 footers and has a new one
coming out..... it is supposed to heat up which should help it along.

You should try the Thai Giant Colocasia plant in your garden.

Put it in a sheltered* place with morning/mid day sun and it would
explode there with the warmth you guys get,they love heat
and will grow fast like a Banana plant when night-time lows
are 75F+

Here is the nicest one I grew(maybe three 4' leaves) right before a
storm snapped it in half...I believe it was only mid July or so.......looks prehistoric!

No I brought it inside near a south window and it just held on.

I was surprised how quick it ramped up but it did have some size last year,they just decline over the winter though.

A guy in N.C.did overwinter one this year so who knows,maybe you could there.

since mine tried to put out the twin leaves it has gone all stupid..the large leaf is now standing straight up like an alocasia...the aborted leaf put out a new leaf which was monstrose and very deformed..and the one that is standing tall refuses to bust open and give me a good size leaf...

If it has not been to wet down there,try over watering it and see if that breaks it loose.

Unless you think to much rain could be part of it? Just trying to be careful here

I guess my thinking is,there is nothing a decent rainfall can't set right,
unless your a cactus,I expect to see mine in shards on the ground
after last nights rain

well you were half right..it rained...it broke it loose..flower time

..might cut em off and hope for a bigger leaf soon

Be careful if you do,sometimes(although it may not appear so)the new leaf is
in the same sheath as the flowers...I accidentally cut one off once.

The leaves will continue to increase in size even with flowers after
one or 2 the same size(first leaf after flowering might be slightly smaller)
mine just went through this and is really ramping it up now.
