My son Isaac and I went to Rice Road Greenhouses this afternoon...

Bismarckia nobilis
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seedscanada/7162437952/" title="IMG-20120508-00655 by seedscanada, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7228/7162 ... 2c0d_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="IMG-20120508-00655"></a>

So those were only the palms and yuccas considered hardy... there were also Washintonias, triangles, sagos, Cocos, as well as quite a few species of bamboo and some southern magnolia. Their prices were SO reasonable!

Nice pics! The one thing you will want to watch out for is that these palms were probably brought in from Texas or somewhere else in the southern US. Your Sabal minor will likely require a bit more winter protection (for the first couple of seasons at least) than a northern-grown specimen, since the palms have likely not been exposed to very cold temps before.

Palms

Post by marclupish » Wed May 09, 2012 7:49 am

I got 2 palms from rice road last summer, the winter protection is key. We had them wrapped for the winter but I believe that the wind protection was not good enough as we now have some browning of the fronds. We still have considerable growth so the concern is minimal. But be sure to protect them very well for the winter season this year.

Eye candy, Adam.
Thanks for those great pics.
I'm impressed with the species offered in the East; doubt we'd EVER see those in western nurseries.
Rice Road GH is to be commended for thinking outside the box.

marclupish, welcome aboard Palms North.
Have we seen pics of yours?

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seedscanada/7168170174/" title="Lincoln-20120509-00691 by seedscanada, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5038/7168 ... 9948_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="Lincoln-20120509-00691"></a>
stands almost 5 ft tall. A steal at 99 bucks.

I'll take one of those bismarkias.

We dont have nurseries like that close to me. I have to drive 2hrs to PDN. Or 4 hours to Garys and Chilli palm.

Hmmm I think I'm going to have to hit this place up in a couple of weeks. My back yard reno is nearly complete. I need to get some plants. I have most of what I want but It looks like this place will have the rest. I would love to get a nice size Bismarkia I know it can't over winter it outside but it can cone in over the winter. A couple of small sabal's would be nice as well...

Rice Road greenhouses in Fonthill, ON..
This past Saturday, we checked out their selection of palms (very much like last years') and took pics of their biggies. I was told more will arrive this week

VERY large queen palms:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seedscanada/8737234038/" title="Rice Rd Lg Queens by seedscanada, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7284/8737 ... f846_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="Rice Rd Lg Queens"></a>

Very large windmill palms:

A nice Australian Tree Fern. the largest of their three available sizes... But I am thinking of buying their smallest, a 3 gal ($59)
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seedscanada/8737236536/" title="Rice Rd Australian Tree Fern by seedscanada, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7283/8737 ... da60_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="Rice Rd Australian Tree Fern"></a>

And their house Cycas revoluta... although they do have very large ones for sale in many sizes
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seedscanada/8737237006/" title="Rice Rd Lg Cycas revoluta by seedscanada, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7284/8737 ... cc9f_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="Rice Rd Lg Cycas revoluta"></a>

I can't wait to get my Yucca faxoniana! More pics next week!!

I got out to Rice Road today. Lots of nice stuff. Their Bamboo selection wasn't much to write home about and VERY pricey. I got a 1 Gal Musa Basjoo and a 3 Gal Windmill for my inlaws retirement present. I got myself a 3 gal. Bismark. My wife saw the snake they have there and wasn't impressed. But definitely worth the drive.

Barb
Barb,

I have to transplant it today its SUPER root bound. and I was totally off in my sizing it was actually a 7 gallon Bismark. I'm putting it in probably 15-20 gallon pot and burying the pot so I can bring it in in the winter/cold nights easily. I'll get some pictures after the with rest of of the yard. I had a slight setback I bought 7 PDP's in a pot from Walmart a couple months back I just separated them this week and planted them and then the last 2 or 3 nights we got frost. :( They're toast now but at least it was only $12 for the 7 of them... not much lost) I've been planting nearly every night this week I got 6 Agave Americana Glauca/5 Agave Parryi. A couple Musa Basjoo, a dwarf Cavendish, A few Yucca Filamentosa. My backyard should hopefully be down this week. Then I get to starty enjoying it.

And Yucca faxonianas

And it looks like soon they will be THE place around here today to buy Poncirus trifoliata. They have hundreds nearly ready.

The 9ish foot Windmill Palm was either $1100 or $1200 (significantly more expensive than getting one in from Mike)

Those were not priced... but I imagine the very large queens are about 750 and the very large windmills 2000 or thereabouts. This is just my guess based on last year. Their queens that were 16 foot and 8 to 10 inch base trunk size were $300? last year and the windmill at 6-8 feet overall was, um not so sure. I know prices were really fair.
That Sabal palmetto this year I believe is $850.

Oh man. If I lived in z. 7 that palmetto would have a new home! They are absolutely my favorite cold hardy palm. Too bad no one is selling them without trunks, I'd be all over that.

Thanks for the update Adam.

Paul,

Why wouldn't you want to take one with a trunk? I'm pretty sure Mike has wintered one in Montreal.
