Wow, that is in mint condition, Tim.

Just think of what your mild winter would mean...if it was every winter :D
The stuff we could grow with no--or minimal--protection.

But then we'd be trying Cocos outdoors

Great work, Tim! I recently saw some great shots of T. "nainital" in Nainital, India. The poster made a point that many of the Trachycarpus in Nainital were regular T. fortunei that were introduced when the area was a British outpost.

Yes, these nanitals don't look all that different from a 'regular' fortunei to me......the only difference I noticed is that all the seedlings had a 'lean' when growing......this 'lean' is gone now.

The most plausible explanation is that the Fortunei hybirdized with Takil.

Hey Tim -That palm looks really good. I have 2 little guys also in my garden and i just put a rose cone over them and they seem to be the hardiest palm in the garden-tougher than t. fortunei and t. wagnerianus
great pics

Yup, with no trunk lean/creeping trunk, it's gotta have hybridized.
What a beauty Tim.

Good looking palm-you can still see the serious lean it had when it was young by all those crossed petiole bases.

Hi Barb,

it does appear that the palm leaves extend beyond the top of the protection but those leaves are really a palm tree in the background in my neighbor's yard.

Hi Scott,

Jim is correct......I do have some lights inside......if temps drop I'll turn them on. We are zone 6b so only a few nights will be cold enough to kill it. Keeping it dry is the key in our area......the leaves buffer the temp drops so a quick drop to 0F with a rebound to 25F will likely not kill it (with no lights).

a palm tree in the background in my neighbor's yard
Had to look at that photo two and three times

I'm a total convert to the insulating properties of leaves now that I've tried it with my Washies.
Used leaf-filled, mostly-black plastic bags.
Did'nt have any rigid wire so "enclosure" was hard to construct, really "lumpy".
I'm absolutely blown away by how warm black plastic bags get on a sunny day (overwrapped with clear plastic).

I goofed though, and placed the thermocube in one Washy's protection.
Hasn't turned on yet and it was -8C (17F) for several nights.

No sun is expected for a week (SNOW :D ) , so it'll cool down now.

A very nice Nanital there Tim. How long can the palm be covered up like that without natural light? I've recently planted a Nanital with a small trunk and too have put Oak leaves around the trunk but the leaves will remain free and open pending relatively mild weather.
My lowest temp so far has been 21F with three days staying below freezing and yet my leaf pile was wet just below the surface indicating good insulation :D I also use Bracken on most of my palms.

Hi Barb,

yes those leaves sure do moderate the temperature........when dry. If they get too wet then there are other issues.

Hi Andy,

your colder than me so far this 'winter'. Our daytime highs have always hit at least 32F so far. This winter so far is like last year.....very warm. December is 5F above 'normal' so far. I kept the Trachy exposed to sun as long as I could but I had to protect it since we were forecasted to get many, many days of RAIN. I was afaid that all the wet and night below freezing would be too much. Lack of daylight does not seem to impact palms for some reason.....as long as the roots are 'cold'. The only palm which I have difficulties protecting is Sabal..........They always brown out on me even though they are green which I remove the protection.

I have another question for you Andy.........in 2010 when you had that 2 week cold spell........did Fatsia die to the ground? I'm trying to figure out which marginal plants survived and which plants died. I recently purchased a few 'hardy' Scheffleras and a couple 'hardy' Metapanex plants. How hardy are these???

One thing though about the leaves, Tim.
Glad you're using really low wattage bulbs...dry leaves and light bulbs aren't a good combo.

Ooops. nearly missed this. Tim I had two Fatsia... Fatsia Polycarpa and Fatsia Japonica. F Japonica survived with little damage. F Polycarpa ( the more beautiful species IMO) appeared to be ok but suddenly died on me in September '11 nine months later from that freeze  Cannot for the life of me get Metapanax Delavayi over here. you may need to protect this plant as its considered a zone 8a plant.

What Scheffleras did you buy? pics please of your booty :D

Hi Andy

I received S. delaveyi, taiwaniana, and a species from northern Vietnam at 2,150m sold bt Far Reaches Nursery. I was hoping your Fatsia was damaged after the 2010 cold spell. As for Metapanex I picked up delaveyi and davidii.

I feel left out! still have all mine with cages still around, but making a quick trip to Maryland so don't want to unwrap and have weather forecast be wrong and me away....They will wait till next week when I get back.

Encouraging to see everybody's palms look so good after what seems to be a longer than usual winter.
