Copper fungicide question

Post by sashaeffer » Wed Dec 07, 2011 5:48 am

When I put my two Windmills to bed for the winter in their protection, I had read about using the copper fungicide powder on the crown to help prevent crown rot and fungus damage. I just sprinkled some into the crown and around the plant base.

Now much to people usually use? and do I need to apply it more often during the winter months? or is it a one time application?

So far, I'm happy to report that even though my protection is pretty basic, and even with a low so far of 3deg temps in protected palms has never dropped below 30 deg, and usually hovers in high 30's as a norm.

I've never used copper fungicide. I think you should only use copper fungicide when you absolutely have to. You can "google" it but I think the consensus is that a plant can build up a tolerance to copper fungicide and its effectiveness is minimized the more you use it. Bottom line is you should not use as a preventive cure.

When closing up my palms for winter, I use a product by Shultz under the Garden Safe Brand name called Fungicide 3 (its a fungicide, insecticide and miticide ). I spray, let dry and then close up the palm hut. I've had good luck with the product. I buy it in concentrated form at Walmart and mix my own in a properly labeled spray bottle. As with any product read the label and follow the instructions for use.
