Updates on Palms & Yuccas Nov.2011

Post by Okanagan desert-palms » Sun Nov 06, 2011 3:28 pm

Here is an update on how my palms and yuccas are doing as of Nov 4th. The Butia eriospatha are a real surprise for me. They need very little care, bug resistant, and have amazingly fast growth. I`m planting one of these babies next spring.

Great pics, John! The eriospatha should do well for you.

Have you ever considered trying S. minor "McCurtain" in your climate?

Fabulous pics and plants John.

What protection did the Sabal louisiana (planted 2010) receive last winter?

The Brahea armata are so very blue...gorgeous.

What is that you just bought yourself? a Daisylirion? A Cordyline?

Great photos and plants! I was at Bill's place a few weeks ago and this Butias were surprisingly healthy. They breezed through last winter (although protected).

Thanks everyone. Barb I bought that Dracaena loueiri or Coryline indivisa off local buy and sell online. I can`t really make 100% ID on it though. http://www.flickr.com/photos/67364497@N ... hotostream

http://heliconiaparadise.com/Dracaena_loureiri.htm The Sabal louisianna were in the same palm huts as the Trachys.

That grows in Thailand? i.e. high humidity?
So a bathroom would be a great spot.

I swear Dracaenas and Cordylines are impossible to tell apart. :|
Didn't Banana Joe have these growing outdoors year round?

Gorgeous, John.

I've only grown Butia odorata (once known as B. capitata). How do you compare D. eriospatha to those?

You have quite the collection there. Thanks for sharing. I have some sort to Butia that I grew from seed and it is quite fast. It is my first seed grown plant to start going pinate.

Cam I would definetly try a S. minor "McCurtain" if I could find some at a decent size and price. Barb I believe that Coryline australis are what can grow in Victoria, and Salt Spring Island B.C. coast. If I had a bathroom with 16 ft ceilings and as big as a bedroom that`s where the Cordy/Dracaena would be! Erik Butia eriospatha is reportedly the cold hardiest pinate palm. The fronds are much softer than a Butia capitata and greener. http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/wooly_jelly_palm.htm
Jubea do you have any pics of your Butia? Thanks.

Mike I don`t have a business website. I sell palm trees and bananas on the weekend during spring and summer. I have sign I put up on the road for advertising. I only have two of the Brahea armata, and four Butia eriospatha. I have a ton of pure W.filifera for sale if you are interested? Tim we have a double car garage which has never been used for cars.

I really like B.Eriospatha, mine has taken 3 years to get established
but has been one tough palm, repeatedly seeing 20F(maybe lower)
all last winter and has never pulled in 3 years!
Knock on wood :?

Thanks Duncan. How are your Yuccas doing? See you in the spring. Jim good news about Butia e. not having spear pull. That is half the battle keeping them alive through the winter. How big was it when you planted it?

Jubea. Thanks for sharing those pics of your Butias. It`s tough to tell at their young age what type you have. Very nice Bismarkia nobilis juvenile as well in the pics.
