Needle palm pricing

Post by wheelman1976 » Wed Nov 02, 2011 8:36 pm

So since the season is winding down I am starting to plan what I want to do next spring in the yard and looking at needle palms. If you've seen my deck and boardwalk you can see I have plenty of space to put some new palms. I'm thinking of along the boardwalk or out by the retaining wall by the pond. Couple questions... what should I plan on for winter protection on these? Same as the windmills with huts and lights? Who has the best pricing/size out there? I'm assuming no one locally will have them and I'll be looking at getting them shipped in.

If you are going to be in some of the southern states towards the middle/end of the summer, you would be able to score some great deals on the "Blue Pot" palms from places like Home Depot, etc. While the hardiness of the "Blue Pots" is always a mixed bag, if you buy multiple palms, you're likely to have at least one good result. I believe that Erik has had some good success with a "Blue Pot" needle palm.

Yes, "blue pot" needle palms in containers up to 15 gallon are relatively cheap at box stores like Lowes and Home Depot down south. Quality nurseries sell them for more; presumably the quality is better.

I think needle palms are a great choice for you. I'd still plan on cover and lights for winter, but you can start that later in the fall than Trachy, and you get more margin of error if something goes wrong (power out, record cold).

I bought these 2 Needle palms for $130 (includes shipping),look for something
in this range or better for mail order plants, obviously you can do better if
you (go get)don't have to ship them.

They both spear-pulled before I planted them,my guess is they were out of their pots
for a while before they were sent.I did get a full refund from the seller.
The first winter(which was the coldest in 20+ years)I protected them with leaf cages.
The temp that winter went as low as -18F,one lived and one died.

BTW

In the second pic(to the right of the Needle palm)is my first attempt at Trithrinax Campestris.

Look how small my cactus were!

Wish you were closer! I just dug up two monsters ,separated them and potted them up. I'd sell the largest for a whole lot less than 100.00 and these things are huge.
