Yard Update June (long overdue) Lots of Pictures!!!!

Post by BILL MA » Tue Jun 07, 2011 11:50 am

Hey Everyone,

It's been a long time is I've posted pictures so hopefully I don't overload anyone. Lots have things have changed here since my last post, lots of new palms and plants have mysteriously found there way into my garden. LOL! Enjoy.

Here's a picture from the front of my house before the plants found there way into the planting beds. This was a week or so back.

Image

And here it is now. Check out the overwinter sago's starting to flush that stayed in the ground last winter. It's already so much bigger since yesterday.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

S. Mag lil gem getting ready to bust open a ton of flowers after taking a beating this year. The one in the back is much father behind.

Image

Two out of three of my old trachies bloomed one is male as I already know for years now but the other one turned out to be female this year. The seeds are starting to grow now, sorry not the best picture. Look closely at the male flowers and you'll see a bird nest that's been there for a couple of months now.

Image
Image

Now heading around the corner of my house to the left is (west side) the totally unprotected minor starting to come back finally not bad after -7.5f it was buried under snow thankfully. Next to that is a banana clump ice cream and two zebrinas with hilo beauty ee in from, you can see indian hawthorn next to them flowering that also saw no protection.

Image

And a little farther down there's my overwintered butia (which came out better then any other palms in my yard) followed by two velutinas that are already flowering and two monster thai blacks. That area needs a little more work.

Image
Image
Image

Down a little more looking into the back yard is the two newly planted waggies male and female and a monster needle. Check out the seeds on the waggy, I didn't think there was that many at first. Waggies are 8 feet for scale, with 5 foot of CT. Thanks for your help Brett with those waggies!!!

Image
Image
Image

Heading into the backyard is my little R&R area that hopefully I'll get to use on of these days, 10 mins. altogether this year. That's about to change!!!

Image
Image

B&B's starting at 375$

Image

Musa AE AE planted from a 7 gal. into a 20 gal squat has just erupted, it's definitely one of the coolest bananas I've ever seen!!! Check out the stripes on this guy. Right now it's putting out a new leaf every 4-5 days in the opening of the greenhouse. An instant favorite!!! The smaller one seems to have more white in it, I think they change some as they get older.

Image
Image
Image
Image

Here's a couple shots from inside the greenhouse. My favorite little princeps in the second one.

Image
Image

Last but not least my poor ensete that was left in the basement for to long with a giant dioon edule behind it with some angel trumpets to the left. Plus some 15 gal. waggies that are for sale for 225$ and up. LOL!!

Image
Image

Hope you enjoyed the pictures. There's many more but I overloaded the board enough for now.

Thanks for looking,

Bill

Oh, man, Bill, talk about eye candy!
As the Brits say, "I'm gob-smacked".

Unbelievably beautiful stuff, good prices too for superb specimens.

Thanks for the close-ups especially of the male and female trachy inflorescences.

Ah...can almost feel the warmth in the GH.

Wow! Double wow.

Thanks for remembering we like pics.

Don't know where to begin, really

The Siam ruby are going to be impressive,it's great they have
so much size to start with and a whole summer ahead of them.

I like the Banana planting with the EE's in front, that'll be another good one
in a few more months.

Are the Trachys next to the fence "permanent" I noticed they are
kinda up on berms.

The Thai giant and Thai blacks are poised for success for sure-
should be really fun to revisit in a few more months when everything rockets!

NICE!

Great shots as usual, Bill! The unprotected sabal looks pretty good considering the low it went through!

That Butia sure came through winter well. Remind us all next Fall how you did it.

Yeah Jesse,

I've been pretty busy here. The first plants only went in the ground are the first of June, such a crapped out spring here but not as bad as others so I'll bite my tongue. I need to look back on posts to see how things are doing for you.

Thanks for your comments!

Hey Barb,

Yeah, I know everyone likes pictures. LOL

Sorry for taking so long with them, I do have a ton more of other crazy plants here but like I said I don't want to overwhelm you all with pictures

If you want more I have more, and more, and more than I can photo  More like post, I'll say it for you Barb HA HA!

By the way you need a greenhouse Barb. Your plant life (your life) quality will improve dramatically. Make one 20 wide X 100 and hook it up to the turbine for heat, isn't it windy there in the winter?

I told you I've been busy Jim!!!

Your phone might need a magnifying glass feature. LOL

Yeah I'm not sure of the siam ruby, I think it's getting pulled back to the GH, it already got destroyed. It was SO nice before it needs to go back to the tropics. It's replacements on deck eager.

The thai's are staying though and getting nana fuel tomorrow to enjoy the 95f temp, Yikes!! 98 Thursday. WEEEEEEEEEE

Trachies are burmed for my enjoyment before there sold. Nice Eye!

Thank Buddy!

Thanks Cameron and Erik,

The sabal is coming back so fast, what a monster!!! It was a 65 gal though  Like I said before this year it gets a house, unheated though.

No worries Erik, all it had was a box with c7 lights and a thermo cube. No insulation just poly plastic. What a awesome palm!!! My favorite other than princeps, what a beauty they can be. If I had room in my trailer I had a 4 ft CT picked out. :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby:

Thanks Guys,

Thank you John!

Most people love it but there's a few bad apples out there that need plucking as I'm sure you know. Business is ok but I have a hearing on Thursday since some dink complained. I've been trying to stay under the radar. hopefully I can pursue my dream like Johnny Appleseed and bring palms to the NE.

Hope all is well for you John.

Thanks

Overwhelm away, Bill, with more pics.

I'm too old to start another project like a GH, let alone heating it with the turbine production.
The bugger's been "down" (broken) for 4 months.
H said to hang a flag from it.

The only time it isn't windy here is when the bugger is working fine... :|

Yup, more pics please.

Bill,
I've also had legal issues resulting from folks who don't appreciate my tropical gardens so I appreciate that sometimes more money goes to the lawyer than the nurseryman.

I have a hearing on Thursday since some dink complained.
There's one in every county.
It's just jealousy...'coz the idiot didn't think of the idea first.
Keep your chin up and your nose clean, and you'll be fine.

Take it from the pro...bin der, dun dat.

Thanks Guys,

Hopefully my friends in high places will set the pace at my hearing. I think I have a much better chance going in then others.

Why would anyone bother you Erik with all your land? WTF? I live in the city, with all your land people really need to get a life.

I'm going to have a chat with the complainer tomorrow since it happens to be in my backyard. Since they just bought the house it might not be a good way to be welcomed into the neighborhood especially by me. ARRRRRRRR.

totally awesome Bill........that variegated banana is to die for. The row of tall Trachy's along your back property line is really cool..... Todays/tommorrows heat will really perk the tropicals up!

Sorry to hear good, interesting fellow plant people are having issues with dirtbags. So true hat people just have to complain and try to control others just to get a grip on their own sad, empty lives. Typical bullies! Send 'em down to Jersey, we'll make 'em disappear! LOL Fugheddaboutit!

Bill, Eric - Thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard ( that people complained). Its not like you have a 150 food nazi flag on top of your house. I guess you have that "community law", where the neighborhood has to look "perfect"? My buddy was telling me about it ( in NC), where hes really leery about planting on his side yard ( happens to be the sunniest place) because of the law which states that your yard cant look "untidy", which according to him, mean what ever your neighbors dont like.

Here, lots of trees are planted on the property line, and usualy u get asked once to do something, before the neighbor breaks out the chainsaw. THats what my neighbors did with a 30 foot white lilac, took the chainsaw, and cut the tree in half  ( the law here is if its hanging on your property its "your tree". Other then that, ive only ever seen neighbors do something once..... Someone called on my net door neighbor, because he didnt cut his lawn for 3 years......

Butter em up with some free plants :P And if all else fails, bring in a rusty old trailor into the back, get a kiddie pool, sit in it in your boxers with a case of beer, and some conway twitty playing all afternoon, im sure the neighbors will see that a greenhouse and some palms isnt so bad..

Everything will be fine Bill, just aggravating im sure.

Bill- Your yard is simply awesome! What a valuable asset you are to this hobby. I guess I'm lucky I don't live within driving distance of you or else I'd be in for a lot of grief from the wife! I'd be bringing home more and more and she already thinks I have too many palms and other plants. I'd be one of your best customers...

What a shame, it's so typical that some d-bag just has to complain about everything. Sidpook said it well, some idiots just want to control others to feel better about their pathetic own self. The only potential issue I can think of is that maybe they could go after you for the greenhouse and give you a hard time about running a business out of a residential property (zoning). I'm sure your lawyers are on top of that though.

If it's just about all the palms and other plants planted on your property, screw em! It is all tidy, classy, simply beautiful. Nobody in their right mind could say it is an eyesore. You should talk to your other (sympathetic) neighbors, drum up more support, even talk to to the media. Get a camera crew out there and get some more positive exposure. I think you will find that you have the vast majority of the public's support. The majority should rule, and it usually does.

On a different note, you guys out east should be getting our latest string of weather soon. 90s and 100s with overnight lows not dropping below 70. All my plants are loving it! We hit 103f yesterday and the low was 78f! It's finally moderating back to the 70s with some much-needed rain for a couple days then back to the normal low/mid 80s. What a nice boost for everything getting a week+ of weather more like that of south Florida in the mid summer!

Jesse- It is undeniably a beautiful banana. Unfortunately it almost always (except Bills in that picture) suffers leaf damage and looks ragged. Very similar to Stuttgart in that respect!

This small pic is similar to every one that I have see firsthand:

Damn... too much wind and sun probably.... Thats also what my musa looked like in calgary, with low humidity, and low water (went home for 2 weeks, it was watered once  ) Thats for the correction too -- STUTTGART ( repeats in my head 1000 times)..

It seems people assume that what works for one type ( say musa basjoo), will work for another ( well say, thai black)....

What have you been doing to the AE AE exactly bill?

If talking doesn't work Bill, send me the coordinates for your neighbors house....
One F-15 strike should set things right, would you prefer Napalm or the more
traditional route?

I think there is a sale on Napalm,wait...yes your in luck.

Explosions are nice but sometimes seeing the offender burn can be very refreshing!

You may want to shield your more heat sensitive plants though-but who
knows, maybe you'll get a nice growth explosion from the high temps!

Only sorry that it doesn't last longer-you know, the burning and all.

Just light that candle...and like Mike said-Fugheddaboutit!

Gott im Himmel!

That yard looks incredible!. I am never going to post any pics of my spread. I cannot compete with that. No way, no how.

I have to have one of those variegated bananas. Holy Smokes!

Bill/Erik-- Curious as to what they are complaining about. Is it the vegetation itself or, at least in Bill's case, a question of maybe running a commercial enterprise?

Wow. Impressive yard Bill! I love it! I love those trachys you have planted out front. So lush and big. Once the bananas fill out they yard will look fabulous. That really sucks about people complaining -- is it the plants or that you are selling them? When I'm out in my yard I have people driving by and actually stop and compliment me on the yard. If they said something nasty or complained, they would be in for a world of hurt! Why do people have to bother with what other people do? I never get that. Control freaks and they need to get a life of their own!

I just want to start by saying Thank You all so very much!!!! You all are really great people, reading everyone's reply's the other morning really did make me feel so much better after thinking about so many things rolling around in bed the night before. I wish I could personally meet each and everyone of you!

Well the hearing was postponed for a month since there was issues getting all the members together, this probably is a good thing anyway. Now I have much more time to rally the neighborhood together to support me. Trust me, now I'm going to bring a entourage with me.

I did see the dink making his way towards city hall on the way home, good think Kari was in the car or I probably would have swerved at his bitch ass! It might be time for the building inspector to get an anonymous call. It appears someone in the neighborhood did a re roof and a bathroom renovation with no permits, there was so many dumpsters in and out of there I just though you should know. I'll fix him.

Thank You All Again,

Bill

Let me know if you need me to show up in a banana hammock to your hearing...I will do what I can. I could probably sway a few people, but we will still have to rely on YOUR good looks and charm.....

Bill, perfect that it's been delayed a month.
Yes, use the time to rally your supporters and make the moron feel he's alone in opposing what you're doing.
You're beautifying the neighbourhood with plants that only previously folks thought could be grown down south.
You're making a mark...and that's good.

Oh no...Mike in a banana hammock (kidding)! :nike:

Keep us informed please.
Wish we were closer and could support you in person.
