The four trachys I protected with just mini lights and a poly box are toast. The others spear pulled and frond pulled today after I noticed things going funky in the middle. Warmth brought out the damage apparently. I don't know if the cold spring did them in or the protection method for winter. Anyhow, I dug them up and put them in pots to see what happens. Probably will trunk cut them and hope for the best but they can't stay in my front yard looking half gone.

Good news is the trachys with the foam box and space heaters are perfect. Probably will stick with those two, protect heavily and enjoy them. :)

Also dug up my ensete as they kept going downhill. One looks like it will pull through for sure (new tiny white roots), the other I think is toast - Mushy roots with bugs all over the corm. I am going to try to do the ensete mutilation on these to get pups for future replacements.

Planted the following tonight as replacements:

(2) more big ensete maurelii that I found locally ... next year they are NOT going in the ground until Memorial Day, lol. Learned my lesson with this cold, rainy spring.
(2) Kalmia latifolia
(4) Cannas (need to get the specific name tomorrow -- it's in the garage on the pot)
(1) Codiaeum variegatum
(1) Rhododedron catawbiense 'Boursault'

Pics tomorrow. Let's hope this works now. We're in June.

Oh, d**n! First Heidi, now you.
I had just decided Trachy were invincible. :?
I lost a LOT of palms this year -- more than I have been willing to admit here. :(
But only one Trachy.
As for late Spring planting, I like it. Soil is warm. My one Ensete hit the ground running last week.
I'm spending the weekend putting plants into warm dirt. --Erik

Sorry to hear that dude. I guess its part of growing things that "shouldnt" be growing there :(

I did the same thing with my Basjoos last year. Planted to early, no multch.... they only grew mabey 6 inches all summer ( and it was a long hot sunny summer :( ). The one that survived, is the one i had to cut down. Now its growing like a weed outside!. IT stops during the cool nights, and takes off with the heat!.

Mabey, if the fit takes you again next year ( cmon, itll happen :P ), Plant them on the hottest, sunnist side of your house, as close as you can get it to the foundation. Thatll give it a slight boost, especialy if the walls are white ( reflects heat and light back at the plant, rather then absorbing it and slowly radiating it). You can do the same thing in an open area, by planting evergreens in a wall around that bed ( the boughs in winter actualy hold heat underneeth! as well as blocking wind). So that in the spring, they will be a bit more protected.

I guess you can uses an old sheet of plywood, but im pretty sure that would make your yard "trailerparkesque"....

Grats on the new buys too! Ive seen some really nice Rhodies around here, you shouldnt have too much problem there! THe same with canna, ifyou get the heat, theres NO stopping them

It's been a tough year for Banana recovery around these parts-
so to speak-we averaged about 13F warmer here than there(May) and
some of my Banana plants are still just coming around!

Damn, Tim!
But it sounds like you've moved on, instead of licking your wounds.

I shouldn't hound you about the mini lights but I feel they're not enough protection.
Minimum would be C-9s, but space heater is ideal as you've seen because it warms the soil inside the box too.

I have a theory.
Roots near the top of soil are more critical to plant survival (just my guess).
But I don't want to prove it the hard way... :?

Looking forward to seeing those nice new additions.
Cannas and rhodo, yeah!

Christmas palm. Burned it up in the sun last summer and almost lost it (was down to just a spear!) It's living under the maple this summer...not making that mistake twice.

Image

Codiaeum variegatum.

Oldest trachy, planted in July, 2008.

Image

FOUR SPEARS PUSHING NOW!!

Image

Trachy I planted last summer. Still leggy, but new growth is coming in more stocky. Hopefully will be able to trim off leggy growth this fall.

I wonder how big the new ensete maurelii will get. They are bigger than the ones I had at the end of last summer. :)

Looks good Tim-about time the weather co-operated!

My Abyssinian has 7' long leaves on it now!

Maybe Barb was right about it hitting 25'

Yours should do well this year....hope some of this heat is coming your way-

Almost 7" of rain and temps in the 90s the past week with mid 90s this week are sending the plants into orbit!

Spectacular new additions, Tim.
Holy cow...those mature specimens would set a Canadian purchaser back big time!

Very nice color on the lupines and rhodo.

  the ensetes!
25 feet? ha ha, they'll lift the maple out of the ground this summer

Fabulous growth on your fav Trachy, look at how stocky those spears are.
It'll really take off.
The skinny one always looks (to me) like it needs water...obviously something in its genes.

You're putting your neighbors to shame, Tim

Thanks everyone. Now, next spring don't let me plant until Memorial Day (last Monday in May for our Canadian posters) unless its the middle of May and my two week forecast shows summer-like weather.

It was 86 Friday, 88 yesterday and so far it's 80 today. 90s this week. Amazing how things grow once normal weather is here. May was such a crudfest this year. And looking back at past Mays, it is quite common to have crudfest Mays before summer takes hold. So that's why I'm implementing that new rule of no planting til Memorial Day. LOL. I will put everything in pots in April which will keep the roots warmer and get growth going before I put them in the ground. Also it's easier to move a potted plant in if a forecast of 45 and rain appears in May.

Now let's take bets on how big those ensetes get that I just put in. :)

You'll have a mild winter in WI and you'll want to get it done mid-April

OK, ensete size bets.
Yours 13 feet.
Jims 22 feet.

My guess is maybe 18' for mine.

Tim's,maybe 8' on the biggest.
Part of that depends on how many warm
days they end up with where Tim lives....

Man,after 90s the last few days I see in your forecast
the the highs may go back to only low 60s-WTF!

This has been a strange year-severely bi-polar!

Back to 70s for highs by weeks end here and maybe another half
foot of rain by middle next week!
We could be looking at 12" of rain for the month by
mid month

Normally planting May 1 would be fine for you Tim-don't go by this year

Looking really good Tim! I really hope you catch a break so your temps stay up for you. Those ensetes will be huge by the end of the year! Once they hit that size they just go nutty.

What size pots where they?

If I was a betting man I would say your trachy will bloom next year unless it's a female. It really looks sweet man, it's filled out so good. I hope your other one pushes out a bunch of leaves this year so you can cut off the leggy ones.

The ensete were in 5 gallon pots; picked them up at a local garden center. Couldn't bear to start out again with all little ones, lol. That would be awesome of the trachy flowers next year. First one in Wisconsin to do so? :)

Bill - Can't wait to see pics of your place this year!
