Old Trachy -- Is this Inflorescence????
Seems this ole Trachy has some life left in it yet, after spending two (heated) winters and one summer planted.
If this is an inflorescence, is it supposed to be brown on top?
And another one's coming up on the other side.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/5696989832/" title="DSC04675 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5025/569 ... dc4724.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="DSC04675"></a>

Plus I've never seen all that tomentum on the stems before.
And...did I ever catch hell from the carpenter who took the palm hut apart.
Apparently, spray foam is also a GLUE.
Who knew?
He had to pry walls, roof, and base apart with a bar. Oops!
Remnants of spray foam glue are all over the place.

I am so excited if the Trachy is going to flower this year!

But I wonder if the brown tips on those growths means no flowers and/or rot?

Barb congratulations on your Trachy flowering! I did some research and if the flower inside the spathe covering is greener than yellow it`s a female. Male flowers are yellow inside. It is rare but possible that it could be a hermaphrodite Trachy. Checked mine today and it looks like I have a female. If yours is a male we`ll have thousands of Trachy seeds from now on. So cool!

Had to look up what hermaphrodyte means.
Kinda like goldfish or some turtles?
green flowers = female
yellow = male.
Sounds like you and I are starting a dating service, John.
And just last week I wrote that I wished my old Trachy would flower.
Will concentrate on the lottery next
Thanks!

Thanks folks.
Cigars and beer for everyone (burp)
H and I were figuring out its age.
It's a year older than our daughter, so Trachy is 35. (I'm still 29...again)
Thank God I planted it as it would've died in its garbage can.
Momma gonna go feed baby...

Thanks everybody.
Yup, it's really 35 (maybe even a year older).
Until I joined Palms North, I figured it would be in a pot all of its life.
And then I heard about winter protection
And the rest is history as they say.
My "bonsai" Trachy can finally grow.
I'm waiting to see whether the flower spathe hangs down, meaning it's a boy.
Or sticks out on top, meaning it's a girl.
Seems happy on the east side of house.
Since last year's growth, the fronds are really stretching up straight and long.
Spears are going to have to barge their way through.
Will post pics as things happen.

Crappy miserable day again ... time for some more pics.
Flower spathe shows from a distance now:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/5713900644/" title="DSC04686 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3369/571 ... 1c6f1a.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="DSC04686"></a>
Next pic shows spathe is still heading vertically, no sign of droop yet
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/5713900648/" title="DSC04684 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3234/571 ... 00ed75.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="DSC04684"></a>
And the other one:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/5713900660/" title="DSC04683 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2265/571 ... e14a2a.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="DSC04683"></a>
Had a good dump of rain last night plus a heck of a windstorm.
Happy that the winds didn't braid the top fronds together
More pics soon.

I bet that has something to do with the roots finally getting out of a pot and doing a happy dance.palms stiff fronds
Interesting that you bring up lineage, John.
That occurred to me too.
Palms weren't that common 35 yrs ago in Vancouver (either in nurseries or outdoors).
Or maybe I just didn't notice.
Makes me wonder about its origins.

great advice Barb
Both Trachys still have no sign of new growth. I poured the copper fungicide down both trunks and we were lucky to have a few days of warm dry weather. the last spear is dried up on the one that had shelter...the one without shelter has a little spear down inside and I'm still hopeful. Really not sure how they're going to pull through. at least my one banana is growing
Thanks for asking Barb, hope all is well on your end!

Heidi, I'm surprised the spear is dried up on the Trachy that was sheltered from all the rain.
Presume you've taken the winter cover off after all the rain and fungicide treatment?
I think some new pics on your post would allow us to compare results from last time.
Glad your nanners are growing!

Yes Ive taken all winter cover off long ago. its back to rain today for the next 3 days so when we get a break I'll take new pictures and post them. Regarding the sheltered Trachy, maybe on the coldest nights when I wrapped the leaves up, it caused the tree some rot, maybe I left it on too long in between temp fluctuations? That's my only guess as to what's caused this.

Wrapping has its problems, especially one that doesn't allow air circulation.
You want to keep moisture out, but not at the expense of restricting air.
People in U.K. mostly use "frost cloth" wrapped very loosely around the growing tip.
But then I'd love to have the U.K.'s winter weather
Look forward to seeing the updates.

The old Trachy looks happy to be in the ground. Sure is doing good.

Barb you should know in the next week or so what your trachy flowers are. Your flower spathes look different than mine at the same age, for what it`s worth. Your palm is looking very healthy. It looks like it skipped the creap 2nd year and went straight to the to the 3rd year leap stage. You will be building a new palm hut in no time.

Bite your tongue, JohnYou will be building a new palm hut in no time
You know what the last one cost me!
I've emailed Wes to get some male pollen sent up ASAP, hopefully we're not too late because yours is ahead of mine.
But like I said earlier "Remind me again WHY we want thousands of Trachy seedlings?" ha ha
Thanks everybody!
