Have to cover everything again? Late season cold ALERT.

Post by wxman » Sat Mar 19, 2011 10:27 am

The weather models have been sniffing out some crazy late season cold for around here starting next week and lasting to early April. Looks like I will have to cover my palms again Monday and leave them covered for maybe two or more weeks!! I have to say this sucks and this is definitely an anomaly. In 2009 I uncovered them early March, 2010 was early March and this year I didn't uncover them to mid-March and NOW looks like that was a mistake.

Hard to find an equilibrium though because being covered in plastic when it is 50F outside could spell death to the palm also from overheating... especially trachys.

Check out this forecast for my city.

Tuesday: A chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. Breezy, with a east wind between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Tuesday Night: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 25. Windy, with a east wind between 20 and 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Wednesday: A 50 percent chance of snow. Cloudy and windy, with a high near 27.

Wednesday Night: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17.

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 27.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 9.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 29.

Horrible!!!!

Please keep that cold in your area! highs in the 20's and a low of 9f is unacceptable!

Well I think I'll wait another week to uncover my trachies also. Today was to be the day but it looks like we will get some of this cold here also. It does not look as bad as 9f lows though! Wow, that is a nasty forecast for this time of year. I bet that would set some records. Ours looks like this:

Today (Sunday) Rain 52f/38
Monday Sunny mid 50s/36
Tuesday 45/33 rain
Wed 41/22 flurries possible
Thurs 35/22 flurries possible
Fri 36/23 part sun
Sat 35/22 cloudy
Sun 39/24 flurries possible
And for what it's worth, the long range shows it getting back to the mid 40s and 50s highs, and freezing point or above each night following. Looks like the worst of this will be to the west of where I am. We even had a nice thunderstorm last night in the middle of the night here! Good luck wxman, keep us posted.

Up here we can't count on the freezes being over until may (and even then we can have frosts/freezes). The records in Toronto for March are 26.7C and -26.7C, that's quite a temperature range (fyi the -26.7 and ALL of Toronto's record lows are from the mid 1800s... I'll double check that!)

How much snow is left on the ground?

If you can get rid of that(esp to the north of you),it
should help out 5-10F on the highs and lows.

Well, well... It looks like the updated forecast today now shows we might see upper teens for a couple of those nights. Still showing highs above freezing each day though and a warmup beginning next weekend. Average daily high here is 50f by next weekend. This sucks, I guess we got spoiled last year when everything could be uncovered in early/mid March and we didn't even get another freeze from then on.

Yea,end of this week into and maybe through next week could get
nasty, lots of energy and cold in place is going to fuel at least one major
snow event(IMO). I hope it misses us but somehow I am not sure we'll be so lucky.

At least this time of year it goes away fast here.

Looks like another pattern change as we head into April,
lets hope this cold spell coming is the last bad one until late
next fall, might as well get it out of the way now!

Good idea covering stuff Tim,I may do the same with a few of
my plants-the Washys are already set up to be protected as
well as the T.ferns but I will probably throw the styrofoam covers over
the palms I just planted to be safe, the Trachys,Needles and Sabals are on their own.

Tim,
I'll try to share. It has been perfect: low of 60, high of 80, day after day. :D
Even the cold front they're talking about will only give us a low of 42
Canna and banana shoots are popping up--never seen that in March. 8)

Wxman and Jim- I'm curious to hear how this latest cold snap affected you guys. Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat, and today (Sun) we are/were in the low to mid 30s highs with a few nights in the low to mid 20s. One of the nights I even had a low reading of 19f! Upper 30s/low 40s tomorrow, upper 40s and 50s onto the coming week, then back to normal and better with no more cold blasts in sight. Even 60s on the horizon.

Precip: We had heavy rain early in the week and when it turned colder Tuesday night into Wednesday morning we got an inch and a half of wet snow here! Just to the north of the twin cities area they got several inches and up to a foot in north central Minnesota! I heard Wisconsin got dumped on also (Wxman?), Green Bay got 17 inches according to the news. The river flooding is bad now and will get much worse as it melts up north. Many bridges already underwater here...

I'm glad I decided to wait to uncover my palms. Though 20'ish lows are no killer I hate to stress them coming out of winter hibernation. I think I'll uncover everything tomorrow or Tuesday as I won't have the time today. Pictures to follow soon...

I'm curious, too.
I'm on the southern edge of this. Low this morning was 36 F. Not a problem for palms in the ground, but I tossed mulch over emerging Canna and Musa, and hauled several potted palms back inside.

Wed 3/23 - 32/26 with 2 inches of snow and 1/2 inch of freezing rain
Thur 3/24 - 28/16 with snow showers - 1"
Fri 3/25 - 29/14 with snow showers - 1"
Sat 3/26 - 28/14 with snow showers - 1"
Today 3/27 - 29/15 and sunny

The snow showers were lake effect from Lake Michigan. Ground is frozen again. Glad I covered everything back up. 40s and 50s later this week!!

Let me remind you normals are pushing 50 here now. This cold is unprecedented.

Our temps have dipped and we actually got some wet snow, if you could call it that. But the two disrobed Trachys did not even blink.

I have some new arrivals and thought it prudent to move them inside.

Low 20s one night was the worst of it but my Trachys had already
started growing from all the 60-70s temps we had earlier.

Most of the spears moved anywhere from a 1/2 to 1" as even the
soil temps were approaching 60F before the cold shut it down.

The good thing about the spears moving is that they bust out of
any chance of rot or spear-pull !

The only plants I covered are the Washys and T.ferns but that was to be expected.

Having 2 1/2 weeks of weather that was warm enough to uncover them was a nice bonus!

The T.ferns already are growing, the new fronds/croziers have already shoot up over
a half a foot and the Washy spears have grown over an inch since being uncovered/untied.

High temps have recovered to at least to 40F everyday-mid to upper 40s today/ one more
ugly day tomorrow.
Luckily it looks like we dodged all the snow/rain and starting tomorrow 50s-60s and 70s
will be back as I look out at the 15 day forecast-
Once we get out to about the 10th of April if the 15 day looks good
I will be thinking about getting the Banana,Abyssinian,Brugmansia etc in-thats when the fun really starts!

During the latest cold stretch we didn't get a day that did not at least get up to or above the freezing point here. Last couple nights remained above freezing in the mid to upper 30s and highs are back to at least normal (50'ish). No more nights dipping below freezing are forecast. The snow is gone except for a few dirty piles in parking lots and a few areas that are shaded or north-facing. My property is totally free of snow, over 3 weeks later than last year! They say it was the 5th snowiest winter on record here with 85 inches officially at the airport!

I couldn't find the time to uncover my palms last Sunday like I wanted to and have struggled all week with not getting home from work early enough to get it done. Today (if I get the time) or tomorrow for sure is the day to finally uncover everything. I'll start a new thread with pictures when I get it done.

Wxman and Jim- You guys get everything uncovered or re-uncovered?

My T.ferns and Washys are the only plants I covered.

They are basically uncovered now-I shouldn't need to cover the Washys
anymore now but the T.ferns(Squarossa-Cooperi)are a little more tender.

All the T.ferns are growing so I don't want to risk shocking the tender new growth
esp on the Cooperi-both are putting out some seriously nice croziers right now.
They are really stunning in regard to there growth speed!

Someone in Cali told me with the summer warmth here they could grow 1' +
of trunk a season! They may just do that this year too!

My Princeps looked beautiful with a little snow on the leaves the other day,
temps went up close to 50F that day which made quick work of the snow!

Next goal is to get the Bananas etc in(as mentioned),the only thing is, that
some of the computer models are forecasting a very large Arctic high
coming down somewhere in/after the second week of April time frame so,I
want to wait a little longer.....

BTW

The Rajapuri banana I planted a few weeks ago has grown(I think) like
10",it is in one of the enclosures(modified-made taller)I used for the Washys,
some days it gets in the 90s in there :D

Jim,
I've seen those same models but they don't call for us down here to get below freezing so it's all out today.
No snow here this week but darn near. Emerging Musa spears (etc.) are frost-bitten; Bizzie in a pot too big to bring inside looking a bit purplish. Anyway, I'm ready to declare Spring "here" even if this is before our usual last frost date. --Erik

All of the cold air was seen to be headed east in this model
run, just grazing my area and not going far to the south.

I uncovered everything Wednesday night when I got home from work. Today I will be mixing manure into my beds and creating a few new beds. That should get them VERY rich for the other tropicals I will be planting in a few weeks...

Come on guys, I need suggestions for fast growing leafy tropicals to supplement my palms and bananas!! :)

Color is good too! :)

Manure is good--I use tons!
For tropical foliage, do you already have Canna, Colocassia, Caladium?
I'm going to try Papaya this year.
I use sweet potatoes for foliage ground cover.
Hibiscus coccinea is fun. Until it flowers, it looks like Cannabis; the flowers when they come are terrific.
I start a lot of foliage plants from seed, like Celosia and basil. Heck, even potatoes from the grocery store are fine and cheap tropical foliage plants. Have fun!

Start the Papayas NOW. You can germinate tons of them and you should. They are tough to get to reasonable size without tropics or a greenhouse. They hate to be transplanted or repotted. I brought in the few survivors and the last of them, a 10 incher, croaked after a I moved it for a few hours so that I could use my saw.

Forecast low of 31 for tonight so I hauled most potted palms back inside. Put old bedsheets over the PDP and Bizzie as they were too heavy to lift. Buckets over emerging Musa. Surely this is the last time--forecast highs in the 90s this weekend :D

Not sure why you need to cover a Bizzy at 31F,
probably a good idea to play it safe ehh?

28F here last night, not cold enough to bother the Bananas
I planted  over the weekend-they are not growing anyway :D

-actually some are starting to pop from the top,I needed to
get them out of the basement as a few were beginning to rot.

Cold didn't bother the Basjoos either and they are starting to pop some
shoots out and a few of the trunks look like they will grow as well.
May get flowers out of them this year if they do!

87F here over the weekend, maybe in the 80s again this weekend

Always a little scary getting so warm so soon as this is usually accompanied
by severe weather. :?

We've got minus 6 C last night after a heavy snowfall. My friends at the altitude 1300 meters above sea level experienced two nights under the temperature minus 10 C. Hope after that there would no been temperature below zero (C) until the end of October.

I brought some potted trachies out this week, been rainy and cloudy, it's supposed to be 27-33F tonight, i'm leaving them out. Doesn't look colder than that in the future.

Jim I've been wondering about my bananas, i've got about 6 that need to come out of the basement too, don't want them to rot, you think they can handle a little freeze if we get another one. Not expecting 90s here 'til July.

Paul, I know they're Trachies but going from a warm house to outdoors with 27-31F low won't do them any favors.

Ok Barb - I just brought them all in. My palms would like to thank you! My back does not.
Just my luck- temps could really drop lower. Thanks for the advice.
Thanks

Why should your back feel better than mine?

Some will say I'm overly-cautious, but better safe than sorry.

You're welcome Trachies! :geek:

All my stuff is back indoors, what a nuisance this back and forth with the weather.
I may leave them in until May...

I feel your pain

Post by TerdalFarm » Tue Apr 05, 2011 7:24 pm

I saw my doc. today about lower back pain. Seriously. I never see docs--it has been years
(oh, wait--this isn't the "this hobby is killing me thread" )
The more tender palms are back inside. Good thing--this morning was forecast for 34 F and turned out to be 30 F (-1 C) at the two nearest gov't wx stations. (FTR, my weather sticker is tied to an unreliable personal wx station.)
Bizzie: she has been out for weeks and is too heavy to move in on a whim. She has seen temps to about -3 C and will lose the two oldest leaves to cold damage, leaving her just the spear and last leaf of Summer 2010. So, the sheet last night. Nest spring she too will stay inside to April 15.
Anyway, they will all go out for the season Wednesday. :D
