What happened to exotic plants?

I'm sorry for some OFFtopic. :oops: One man asked me what happened to his plant but i didn't know what to answer him. I think it maybe overwatering? Here are some pics:

I'd like to support the Serj query mentioning that there is no any frost in the region (Krasnodar, Russia) these plants are growing...

Guessing soil too.
Too dry? or pH?

Is that a mulch of sunflower seeds?

Ive never seen leaves go black like that from not watering, for me they shrivel up, and go dry. These seem to be mushy. I would say frost damage, but then why would soem of the lower leaves, be black , while some of the top ones arent???

I took a quick look in my gardening book, it might be phospherous deficiantcy. usualy a problem in areas with high rainfall, and acidic soil. The book says bonemeal, or a general NPK fertilizer. a quick quote from my book "techniques and tips for gardening"

" symptoms are similar to nitrogen deficientcy: weak growth, leaves are small and become dark green and purple (looks at serjs pic), flower and fruiting is small, while fruits taste acidic.......... phosphorus washes out of limestone and heavy clay soils very easily"

ID test the soil for PH, and if its acidic, and you have clay soil im assuming its a phospherous defficiantcy. Im not an expert though, hopefully someone can back me up

We grow many Rhodos here and soils are acid as climate is very rainy, but I've never seen leaves like these...
