Look at what I scored for free today

Went to the local garden center and this was planted out front. I asked them what they planned on doing with it this winter as it would die in a few weeks. They said they were just going to throw it out. I said "I WANT!!!" They dug it up for me and I brought it home.

Excellent. That palm will repay you for saving it and grow like a sob.

Mark the date on next year's calendar, and head back there.

What a score!

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Well, so far all the leaves except one and the spear have turned brown. Hope this thing makes it. Any tips guys? Room is 85 and lights are on 16 hours a day. Hope it's just a minor set back...

I'd say with the temps your talking about it should bounce back just fine. I take it your plant room is doing good wx? Did you kill off all of those mites you had with the neem?

Nice score. They are tough palms if the spear is kept dry. It is probably going through transplant shock. If the spear is fine then it will survive.

I ended up wacking the bananas down and cold storing them. The mites were ruthless. Came back within 12 hrs of spraying. So far they are leaving all my palms alone, though.

However, I've been keeping the temperature around 85F, humidity around 45%, so that makes a dewpoint of 61F, or a nice summer day by comparison. I have the grow lights on 16 hours a day, but it seems my plants are growing SO SLOWLY!!! I have 5 seedling robustas with about 5 leaves and they are taking 4-5 weeks to push a spear. My sabal palmetto, sabal minor and bismarkia seedlings have also barely grown. My potted butia and washy have only pushed a frond in the last month.

Is there something I'm missing here?? My in ground washy will push a frond a week outside in summer during the same weather conditions.

Patience my young friend. I don't think you can expect the same growth outside during summer versus inside in winter with similar growing conditions. Summer sun, temps have more to offer than a few lights in your basement. My goal for my basement greenhouse is too keep my stuff alive for next summer. Hope you understand.

I think I asked you before wx, but are you using standard florescent 40 watt shop lights? The only way to get really good growth inside is to use metal halide lights, major watts and pretty expensive too. Remember even if they don't look like there growing much, there still growing roots, which is better then nothing. The stuff in my grow room is growing fairly well, temp. is around 60 with 90% humidity, I'm not really looking for crazy growth or they'll over grow the area. Slow and steady is good enough, with a bit of luck all my nanas will fill there pots with roots by spring.

I'm using 40 watt GE plant and aquarium bulbs. No way I'm using metal halide. Too much money!! LOL!! Seems bright as heck in there, but I guess its not as good as the sun, lol.

Transplant shock on that Washy for sure.It will recover over the winter if the roots stay warm and be ready to rock next spring!
