They are getting big, especially for zone 5.

Trachycarpus fortunei has been in the ground 14 months.

Washingtonia robusta has been in the ground 15 months.

I think the black stone increases the heat, and the white rocks reflect solar radiation into the palms. Seems to be the perfect setup as they are growing rapidly! They only get three hours of direct sun a day also. Shaded by house in the morning, then get three hours of sun, then a maple tree shades them in the afternoon. They sometimes get an hour of low sun in the late evening. Maybe they are trying to get vertical above the maple's canopy! (lol)

One nice thing in my yard(like yours wx)is that I get a lot more sun when the leaves have fallen off the trees.One reason to look forward to fall!

The extra sun will help out our palms though!

Yea,my yard has all day sun in winter.Next year (this winter or when ever the leaves are gone)it's time to cut down some branches,this should give me another 3 + hrs of sun.at least!

wxman, I always admire how dark green and clean your palms are, and no bent fronds from wind damage.
Spectacular...I think they're my favs too.
At least while I stop dreaming of Bismarckia nobilis and Licuala grandis!

Yeah I'd like to wack the culprit (maple) in the front yard, but the wife won't let me. She says we need native trees in the yard. BLAH!

Thanks for the comments. Palms aren't 100% perfect, some windblown/broken fronds on them. They are really green because I dump the milorganite on by the shovel full every week in the summer, and then last two weeks been giving them a magic cocktail of miracle grow. Not recommended late in the season, but I want them to grow as much as possible with this warm spell. They won't see any sub freezing temperatures, so should be ok.

Can't wait for next season. Going for 3-4 feet on the Robusta.

To funny about the maple, that made me laugh! I don't see you having a problem with the miricle gro since your palms won't see the real winter weather. I used the 20-20-20 last year on my trachy and man did it grow a ton. But it did this year too so who can figure. More leaves and more trunk the better. Trachys are my favorite by far with all there toughness and beauty how could you go wrong, and they keep getting nicer looking with age.

Wxman, my frost scare the other night sure did make me nervious it was really close. Late Oct. is the norm to early Nov. some years so I would have truely been, Seriously Pissed Off! Go figure 11pm and 60 right now today was 80 and beautiful a top ten day.

Hey wx,sounds like a great offer but with 25 cactus and 25 palms to protect already I think I better stay with what I have,I do have some backup stuff now as well.
We'll see how the Butia and Washy do this winter,they will be head to head because they both will have the same protection.Based on the Washys cold hardiness of course!
I am going to half the Maple that's on the east side of "my"yard,hopefully get 3-4hrs more sun!

To bad we live in the wrong directions, I would go. Trust me you can fit a ton of palms into one truck. LOL That's one of the places I went when I was down there. STUFF IS CHEAP TOO, three gal. plants for 4 bucks 7 gal oleanders 12 bucks ect. It's like a candy store for plant loving adults. I have the wholesale lists of all the suppliers and what they carry so let me know if your going for real and I'll give you some phone numbers.
