Advice on plant selection...

Post by Rubtherock » Wed Jul 29, 2009 6:04 pm

I'm tearing everything up in the pic below. I'm thinking about putting windmill palm on the corners to replace what is there. Is this the best selection and what should I fill in with between the two palms that will look tropical?

If possible can you post a picture straight on? Also one from the front of the garage, but back enough to see some scale.

Without seeing it at a different view I would go with three trachys. The only problem will be when they grow over the roof they might look weird. Thats why I want to see the other pictures.

Start with a base and then you can worry about the fill in stuff later.

You have many options. Heres a quick photoshop. Trachy / sabal minor / needle / sabal minor / trachy.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Where are you located in NC? I'm guessing your in the coastal area since you have a Washingtonia growing. You may also want to consider Sabal Palmetto.

I live in Belmont NC which is about 20 miles west of charlotte. Four hours from the coast or 3 hours to the mountains. Haven't seen any other washingtonias in my area.

On another note, a guy on another forum told me to lay off the tropicals because they clash with the evergreens in my yard. Any opinions on this?

I'm trying sabel palmettos next. I've seen a few of those around here and they seem t do well. I will let you know how the washingtonias do next spring. At best they are prbably marginal here, but I'm going to build a box around them, as they were my first choice because I like the way they look and growth rate better.

I wouldn't worry about what anyone else thinks about your palms, it is your yard after all. He's just jealous because he dosen't have a hobbie to enjoy. More palms the better, maybe you should plant some more evergreens and send him a new updated picture

That's what I like to hear Bill! My opinion is that one cannot have too many palms or tropical plants. I'm digging up all the evergreens in my yard and have already removed many. I do have to leave the leyland cypress rows that separate me from my neighbors on each side, but palms, bananas, nad cannas will look nice ilined up in front of them.

Never to many palms is my motto  . Maybe your neighbors will plant some too after seeing that palm trees will actually grow in your yard. Maybe use some Bamboo as a screen for your neighbors.

He does have the tracktor, he could rip out the leyland cypress, dig trenchs put a barrier in, and pop in some Bamboo. I might do the same thing next year on one side, not that I don't like my neighbor but it would be nice to see green in the winter.

Lesson learned: Never ask self loathing palm haters their opinion. Lol. Great advice guys. Another tree I think looks good with Tropicals is little gem magnolias. I have several of those around my yard.

BTW, I'm installing three sabal palmettos in the next two weeks.

Palms and evergreens can co-exist. a nice balance can be achieved by planting palms everywhere you have a spot

That picture proves how well they look together!!! Here is the advice quoted verbatim: "I think that creating a "tropical" lanscape should be approached with caution. I see evergreens in the background, and in my opinion they don't visually mix well with tropicals. Don't go all out tropical. keep it understated and classy. it would match your house MUCH better than a flambouant show of palms and hibiscus."

Here are pics of my new palms waiting to be planted in the discussed area. Needle palms on the ends, European fan palm in the middle, and Sabal Minors on each side of the European Palm. Thanks for the help.

Looks good, but European fan palm will sucker like crazy and if you don't keep up with it it will branch out in front of the windows over time. Needls sucker but don't really trunk and much slower growing.

European fan palm.

That's going to look really nice! Very easy to take care of in the winter too. Good luck digging out all that crap clay. I'll trade you my nice dark soil for your winters. That sounds fair what do you think :D

Don't forget to invite the whole neighborhood over for a palm planting party. You can put up a big sign at the end of your driveway, that should make your palm buddy happy!

Ooooh, great graphic Todd!

I love the idea of palms at each end of your house. But so your windows don't get covered, cannas would look stunning under the windows. And would you consider some form of trunking yucca against the brick? As the yuccas grow, their bluish colour would be highlighted against the brick.

BTW I got my 6 gorgeous baby Yucca Rostrata Sapphire Skies from a nursery in N. or S. Carolina called Plant Delights.
They have great nursery stock.

I think a nice threesome of some palm (CIDP?) would look super AWAY from the house too, towards the roadfront.
Would balance the palms at the house with something a little further away.

Get the beer. We'll help you.
