here is a picture of my butia capitata. It is of fairly good size. I have the fronds tied up to save space in front of its window. It really spreads out if left untied.

this picture is not cool or unusual, but I just set it up as my new screen saver for a while. Its a picture taken in March 2005 (springbreak) from the house we rented in Bonita Beach Florida. It was so nice to sit on the deck every morning have coffee, read the paper and answer work emails and no on...

January 10, 2009 update. I trust everyone had a nice new years. We've had very moderate temps over the last few weeks, highs in the 30's 40 and 50 's F (thats -1, 4 and 10 C) and nothing lower than 20F (-6C) at night. My leaf pile is in the 40's (4C). I am amazed at how warm the pile is staying. If ...

new temperature report just in. we had 2 days of temps near20F (-6C) and nightime lows around 4F (-15C) and the leaf pile hit a low of 27F (-3C). Last night the low was 32F (0C) and the leaf pile was at 37F (3C) this morning. Somehow it generates heat and it must be the decomposition of grass and le...

Thank you Barb. The shower is a good idea , but I am a very modest man, it makes me nervous to shower when others are in the room  I do have a warm air humidifier in the room with the coco and in winter I run it twice a week for 24 hours at a time. It does pretty well. Not sure of the mature he...

Barb and Steve - nice lookin' stuff you got there. I'll get my camera out this weekend and post some spear photos. I always love seeing other peoples plants this time of year. My Foxtail just opened a nice big frond. Look at it everyday and smile. If it only knew it was 4 hardiness zone removed from...

Hey Jim. I am following your other threads and I beleive you may be the hardest working zone pusher I know. Please keep up the good work because it helps all of us. I think my leaf massses with covers will keep the ground from freezing solid, but I think where I get all the benefits is keeping the s...

funny you should ask Don because I was going to post some numbers here today. We have had a couple of cold nights in a row, below 20F (-6C), with no sun during the day to help warm up and last night it was 17F (-8C) in my backyard and it was 36F (2C) under the leaves. The coldest of the season so fa...

The Sabal Louisianas are by far the fastest sabal I have growing. I have the S. McCurtain, S. Louisiana, and S. Minor and the S Louisianas are twice as big as the others and all germinated within a few months of each other. The McCurtain seems to be my slowest grower. Steve, again, very nice pics. Y...

Barb - you can spend alot of money on a specific grow or plant bulb. 99% of my palms spend winter inside and I use regular old floodlights on palm trees in an upstairs bed room and the palms are perfectly happy. The first year I overwintered stuff I spent hundreds of dollars on grow bulbs, and switc...

Thought I would post a picture here of what I am doing to protect some of my inground palms. Following is a picture of 3 small palms covered in a mulch of leaves and covered by a plastic trash bag (no lights, no heat provided) . I did this last year and these three palms survived in ground after bei...

ditto on your stuff. everything looks great. The areca vestiaria have great color for being young palm trees. I hope they stay colorful. The water feature is a great idea. Good luck. Steve now I know why you never invite me over for dinner - there is no place to sit in the dining room. We are having the family Christmas at our house this year and my wife has already layed down the rules about plants in the house for winter and expecially nothing in the dining room. It seems a bi...

for what its worth I treat most of my potted palms with granular insecticide before bringing them in for winter as precautionary. I have learned in the past that you can bring in alot of nasty looking bugs and things in the soil that my wife hates. I carry everything into the garage for a few days a...
