Welcome! Yes the trachy will be ok during most winters, with some form of protection. The butia will make a nice potted palm you can bring out in warm weather and put up in cold. They're are probably the hardiest pinnate palm, but still far lacking in hardiness than a hardy fan palm. Note that I am ...

Looks pretty bad...freeze-dried from winter winds, I would say. The damage could have occurred weeks ago but if you're just now experiencing a thaw, then that could explain why the damage is just now showing. But, like Jim and Barb stated previously, it's too hard to tell what caused the damage at t...

You're welcome. Seems it's never the plant that we want to be the most hardy, that truly is. LOL I've never tried rooting gloriosa but in the spring I may. My big gloriosa has three heads that all bloomed, and if they're planning on dividing three more ways, well, let's just say Hercules may have to...

They'll be fine. I have had unrooted aloifolia sit outside all summer with no ill effects. I found a small cutting that I forgot about for a year that was PUSHING SPEARS with no roots! It had also seen many freezes until I found it and potted it up. I'm wondering if I shouldn't have planted them...t...

Can't add much - Eric and Barb pretty well covered it - but I don't put hot water in them. I fill em once and cap it and I don't open them until spring when I'm using them to water everything. The heat from hot water doesn't last long enough for me to justify the expense (physical and financial) of ...

They're neat! I saw some ( I think they were aralia) outdoors at the tulsa, ok zoo last week. Looked just like your plant on the right. They were big, so I think they were in-ground all year here. Also spotted small tree sized caesalpinia pulchirrima (I'm sure I butchered that) too. How hardy are th...

TonyC in Dallas made a post recently on the HP&SB about winter cold damage to washingtonias. 2011 was a rough winter. The damage he posted, looks similar to yours - but I don't think your palm looks as bad as those he posted.

Wow too cool! I think they like where they are! How are the fruit progressing? Looks like the wind has been kind to them, you probably have two more good months of growing, right? Wonder what they'll top out at? Mine hit 14' (leaf tip, not pstem) on about their third year. Then I moved them, then we...

Lol. I bet your stock tank heaters did the electric bill damage. Electric resistance heating is expensive. My heatpump has an electric secondary stage. I can always tell if it's been particularly cold by the increased electric usage. Fortunately it doesn't call for the secondary very many times duri...

Cerifera isn't accepted. It's a synonym of the original name Argentea. I wonder why we been callin it wrong all these years?

Thanks Jim. Means alot coming from such a pioneer as yourself. I always enjoy seeing how well your plants do, and think about how much heart you put into everything and it shows. Appreciate the tip on the Stuttgarts. Erik, you bet! We're supposed to enjoy some way below average temps the next few da...

I've never purchased from PDN, but everything I've read is good. Yes the plants are small, but everyone says they do well. Maybe one day... Have you ever ordered from Brian's botanical's? I got the Stuttgarts from him, and was very pleased. I received 7 huge rhizomes for 18$ plus 12$ to ship. It was...

Finally, the sabal Louisiana. Put out 4 fronds after transplant last year, working on frond 3 so far this year. That's a Texas Redstar hibiscus to the left, and a tropical passionvine to the right. There's some stuttgart canna in there as well. Seems ok so far, gets about half a day of sun. <a href=...
